The 5:40 for me always evokes memories of Carol Barnes. I recall her most presenting that program. The version introduced when ITN became computerized.
Alastair Stewart: the previous 5:45 era, also anchored by Michael Nicholson for many years.

Ah yes, Carol did do the 540 a lot. She seems quite present during 1991 as many clips of the Gulf War featured her at the 540 news desk. Fiona I think was with the 540 for most of its time on air, certainly from 1989 until 1991 - not sure if she did right up until it became the EEN though. Although, Fiona also presented the last few months during the original 545 era, as well as that shortlived second 545 era from 88-89 (the first computerized look as you mentioned). I think Alastair also presented during the second 545 era, but I've never seem any evidence of him on the 540. From 89 onwards he seems more associated with News at Ten than anything else. Is that right, do you think? I kind of miss that 'computerized era' 545/540 theme, it was pretty good. I also like the voiceover they had on the 545 during 88-89. Sadly that didn't carry across to the 540.

Yea, from memory, that's pretty spot on. There were a few others around at the time who appeared during both versions. Michael Nicholson, as mentioned above, plus Martyn Lewis and Anne Leuchers.
Leonard Parkin was on the earlier 5:45, before going back to the NAO.

Did Julia Sommerville also present in this slot? Or was she only on the ITN early morning news.

Don't think Julia Somerville ever did the ITN Morning News. Zeinab Badawi launched that in 88 and it was usually presented by the overnight newscasters, e.g. David Cass, Tim Neilson, Phil Roman, Gavin Scott and many more.
Julia joined ITN in 1987 to host the ITN News at 12:30 before eventually moving to News at Ten. She then went back to lunchtime in the 1990s. She also occasionally did weekend bulletins, the ITN World News and probably the Early Evening News at some point.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but is it known if ITV News will be at the Olympics for their news bulletins during the games? I'm sure on the night of th opening ceremony they will be live but do they have a studio or whatever? Will all bulletins be broadcast from the Olympic park, the NaT?
LO
ITV News have got a studio next to London Tonights studio on the top of Westfield Stratford's car park.

Just seen the piece about Alastair and, for me, he was Mr News along with Sandy Gall an Leonard Parkin whilst I was growing up.
But the NAT tune, still perfect as ever - is there any ever chance of it returning permanently to NAT instead of the mess we have today - as the piece said it is ITN's/ITV's premium news programme!
