It's weird - that music still fits in so much better than the current one, even in the current set. Also is it just me, but I much prefer the closing shot tonight, they should definately use it more often. Although different shots on he jib are good to see, I think basic is best sometimes.
Also is it just me but do they seem to be showing less of the studio in the last few days? There've used the split screen quite a few times in the last few days, more than usual I think.
I think the split screen was because they went from in correspondent on the wall opposite the presenter and then went to another soon after, probably no time to switch the feed in the wall.
Yes this closing shot is better, I thought if they did that shot and made it look like the credits were projected onto the des. As an add on, if they then moved the camera further down and zoomed in, it would be a better transition for the ITN end cap.

Seeing as I've seen them switch from a correspondent to another correspondent instantly, I'm not sure what you've said makes sense. ITNcameraman - can you shed any light on this? or have I just imagined it?
Why would they want to make it look like the credits were projected onto the desk? That would look cheap to say the least.

The closing shot worked tonight specifically because it was different to usual. It's good to mix things up most of the time so that occasions like today stand out. I had wanted to replicate the 1991 closing shot but it was static and didn't lend itself to the story, especially as we deliberately didn't run credits.

I think you did a great job. A fast moving swooping shot just wouldn't have been appropriate tonight, not least with that music. The more sedate pull back combined with the dimming lights was absolutely spot on. Couldn't have been better for me.

Without digging out the running order, I can't honestly remember why we took boxes into the Olympic Park. Yes, pretending the credits were on the desk would not look great, would limit the endshot and would mean it had to be static, too. And for what it's worth, the camera was on the deck at the end of the show tonight, so it couldn't have gone much lower!
So it's not just the current theme then that moves away from the main hook of the so familiar theme. First time I've heard that version - can't say I particularly think to much of it, but great for them to use it as a tribute tonight.
Listening to the old News at Ten music last night got me wondering about which music you most identify with other great ITN newscasters?
It's a shame that ITN didn't pay tribute to John Suchet when he retired in 2004 by playing his Early Evening News theme from 1992-95. I know he worked at ITN on multiple programmes for many years but that's the one I always associate with him. His send-off was really quite poor; no VT, no mention of it except his own rather emotional sign-off and no special end music. Yet the following year Sir Trevor got his NAT theme when he retired for the first time.
Aside from that, when Alastair Stewart retires, I really think it should be the News at 5:45 theme for him. I know most people associate him with the London Tonight 1993 music, but he's already had that on his send off from LT in 2009, so I'm thinking on more a national level. Any other suggestions?
I also tend to associate the News at 5:40 theme with Fiona Armstrong and Sue Carpenter I associate with the Weekend News theme (1987-92).
I don't really associate any of the themes since 1995 with any particular presenter, as they've all presented with those tunes so there's no special link.
