I can't see why ITV couldn't have aired Benidorm at 9.

I don't know the answer, but I can tell you that they routinely pre-record various sequences. Nearly always the Bongs (unless they run out of time, ie. if the presenter cocks it up too many times or something) and sometimes the Postcom is pre-recorded when it uses the crane/jib camera. So, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the close was pre-recorded on this occasion.

Was the close to the 6:30 live, as they had various shots earlier in the programme?

Aidan Lunn has uploaded a full News at Ten bulletin from September 1984. It's presented by Sir Alastair Burnet and Pamela Armstrong
What simple yet fantastic presentation. No silly whizzy graphics, no sensationalist scripts, no celebrities, just straightforward reporting. And that title sequence is fantastic, I love the original News at Ten theme music. It should never have been re-worked - it was simply outstanding as it was in my opinion.
