I don't think calling it 'ITV News at Ten' is the biggest issue really, except for those people who obsess over the whole ITN v ITV thing 10 years later.

When you've got the BBC renaming the Ten O'Clock News, the BBC News at Ten, I suppose they had to do it.

It didn't mean changing the set etc though.

I suppose they think that people like tabloid news, emotive language etc in print, so why not on TV? You can't deny that the red top tabloids along with the Mail and Express to dominate newspaper sales.

The only problem is that, tabloid newspaper readers are more likely to not watch any TV bulletin, so it doesn't really work on TV. Tabloid News at Ten will never win viewers over from Katie Price or whatever on ITV2

I agree that it isn't the problem - I think the point we were making is that the presenters calling it that just sounds unnatural.

I don't think the relaunch has done that much to viewing figures - I think I read it was 2.4 million yesterday. Anythink between 2 - 3 million is normal - As much as I would like it to , it's not going to get double that overnight - what BBC News is getting !

Exactly. I don't think the news agenda has changed as much as people are making out too. ITV's biggest mistake is the popularity of it's previous backdrop - if this had come before hand I think many would look on it more favourable. This look is far superior to the 2004 and 2006 sets IMO, and does the job perfectly.

My only real gripes are the voiceover, ditching the News at Ten logo (I can live with losing the titles, theme and set) and using a generic shot of Big Ben in the titles - wouldn't have taken much effort to have the correct time for the relevant bulletins in the titles. The astons need tweaking a bit too, but as oversized as they are, nice to see them do something distinctive when they could easily have gone the standard route with ever shrinking text.

There is no big deal by calling it "ITV News at Ten", in fact it makes perfect sense when you also have BBC and Sky versions. And I don't think someone will be put off watching it just because they've suddenly put ITV in front of it.

On a studio related note, did anyone capture last nights 10pm bulletin? I was flicking through and didn't really catch what the story was about, but the story images were using the houses of parliament on all three "screens" and it looked very good and it lifted the set so much and actually looked really nice. Anyone who seen it will know what I'm on about; perhaps they should consider putting a backdrop on in a similar way, even if it is like the Britain's Got Talent titles as someone suggested earlier in the thread.

I know what you mean, I thought it looked great with Canary Wharf imagery:

Here is a recent breakdown of region by adult population :

London 9.4m
Central 7.3m
Granada 5.4m
Yorkshire 4.8m

Meridian 4.7m
Wales & West 4m
Anglia 3.7m
Tyne Tees 2.3m
Westcountry 1.4m

I agree with your assessment of the 'Big 4', but it was always based on network contribution in the past: although that was probably relative to advertising income and indirectly therefore population.

It's worth mentioning, however, that Wales & West are no longer a region in reality. Wales is it's own region and West & Westcountry another for regional news purposes.

I think the rumoured shuffling of NAT for IACGMOOH is a very mad move. I think the audience are prepared to accept changes for live sporting events, but not for gameshows which are just scheduled at the whim of the network to a certain extent. People haven't forgotten 'News at When', and this is just going to bring that memory to the fore once again.

And the big 4 highlighted there were always traditionally the regions that produced the main share of network programming.

Hmm, I have to query that Westcountry number. Seems low for a region that takes in Devon, Cornwall, most of Somerset and West Dorset. It always used to be advertised by Carlton and Westcountry before them, as having 1.7 million adult population.

On my EPG, it's still Morning, Lunchtime, Evening & NAT. Even the announcer said Morning News today.
