As ITV is to get a brand refresh later in the year, will this have an impact on the ITV News. If ITV scrap the yellow look then the current ITV News branded look would be out of date.

It's not compulsory for the news to be the same colour scheme as ITV1, in fact at most points in the past it wasn't.

That's assuming they ditch the yellow logo of course.

I think ITV are keen to keep ITV News in line with ITV1 and therefore any changes to the channel would probably prompt changes to the news.

Well, it was all borne out of standard branding agency gwabble that the phrase "BBC NEWS" had to be inserted as one or else people wouldn't be able to comprehend that the "News" on their "BBC" service of choosing was being provided by the one and only BBC News.

And lo, the concise, well known but all too often BBC-less News 24 became BBC News ... or is it the BBC News Channel ... or perhaps the News Channel... whatever that is.

Very interesting.

I had no idea that's why they changed their bulletin names, but it actually makes sense if the intention was to ensure the phrase 'BBC News' was not broken up by BBC Six O'clock News .

For a while they were officially known as the "BBC News at Ten o'clock" etc. but of course it is usually branding nonsense. People know if they're watching news on the BBC it's likely to be from BBC News and IMO anyway something like "The Six o'clock News from the BBC" actually sells the BBC better than the "BBC News at Six".

It'll either be a temporary bodge job with a new logo slapped over the current look - but to be fair in recent years they've been quite good at rebranding at the same time as ITV - both in 2004 and 2006 they relaunched the same day I think.

From Broadcast;

Quote:
ITV News has promoted senior journalists James Mates and Penny Marshall to editors as part of efforts to bolster its specialist reporting.

Award-winning senior correspondent Mates will become European editor, where he will draw on his considerable experience to keep viewers updated on the future of the EU and what it means to the UK.

James has held a number of high profile roles at ITV News both in the UK and abroad, including diplomatic editor and both Washington and Moscow correspondent.

Separately, special correspondent Marshall has been promoted to social affairs editor, leading ITV News’ coverage and analysis of issues affecting the British public, including education, welfare and public services reform.

It builds on the appointments of Laura Kuenssberg as business editor and Richard Edgar as economics editor last year.

I was just about to post about James being referred to as Europe editor on tonight's News At Ten and now I know why.
Would anyone expect Penny reporting more often? I can't remember last time I saw a report that she did!

Will James be based in Brussels? A big move for him if so, he really is along with Bill Neely and John Irvine and formerly my favourite ever correspondent Julian Manyon a top class reporter. He's also a great presenter and could be a successor to Alastair Stewart etc. as one of ITV's top presenters.

Agreed.

I think there's something almost grandiose about that longer title that reflects the BBC's reputation for news much more accurately than do the shorter, snappier titles currently in use.

Interestingly (or not), the presenter scripts and auto-cue for tonight's NAT had 'Europe EDITOR' in big capital letters ... just to ensure they got it right when introducing James' report.

Well if James has got a bigger role now and possibly based in Brussels this could be the end to his newspresenting days. If I remember rightly, he used to present the news most Sundays? Wonder if we might get more of Geriant/ Daisy or even Faye Barker?

So does that mean that James Mates will be working alongside with Martin Geissler, or will he getting a move elsewhere?

Think I saw that James will still be based in London, Martin Geissler returning to cover the North of England in the summer.

James said on Twitter that his Europe Editor role will be in addition to his current presenting duties.
