I'm split on this actually. Take the current and previous looks: both are virtual, but I'm sure most would agree that the London skyline backdrop was one of the best "sets" ever used for an ITV bulletin. That night-time view, though synthetic, was totally breathtaking. In stark contrast, the current design just looks like a mish-mash of rectangles.
Then again, there have also been awful "real" sets. Remember 1999-2004?
It all depends on who is designing the set, I suppose. Did the same people design the NAT '08 and the current backdrop...?
I would hope so.
But, as awful as the current branding is, I do think that an editorial revamp needs to happen first. And fire whoever's doing the graphics - talk about taking the mick! Some of the graphics designed lately look like they've been done for a children's programme or something.
I wonder if ITV News will ever break out of the virtual studio in future ?
To me, virtual has lot's of potential, but it's not used to any particular effect now since the 'Theatre of News' frame / platform were taken down, it's just a backdrop.
I think for the next revamp it should be back to bringing in some real elements. Virtual has had it's day.

I know this is jumping the gun a bit, but if this change did take place, surely they would take the opportunity to rebrand etc again?
I would hope so.
