Mary reading 'in other news' in front of Buckingham Palace on the 6.30pm news did look a bit strange. If they insisted on it being double headed from Buckingham Palace, there is no reason why a third presenter couldn't be in the studio which is what they did last year when it came from Houses of Parliament on numerous occasions.

Yes, I'm almost 100% certain that one of the other presenters will have been sat in Studio 2 ready to go just in case they lost communications between GIR and Buckingham Palace. So, why not have them read the other news? It was especially pertinent tonight because of the cheering crowds. Very inappropriate when dealing with serious stories.
I think today is proving that one of the smartest moves ITV ever made was signing up Julie Etchingham when they relaunched News at Ten, and never mind number one female, she is very clearly the top dog at ITV News full stop now, whilst Mark Austin is relegated to slumming it with the general public.

Yeah she definitely seems to be the face of ITV News now. Even Alastair ( Apart from today where he was sidelined a tiny bit) seems to be more of the main male anchor these days. Even James Mates got the more prestigious job than Mark today.
They do seem to be pushing Julie a lot lately, perhaps it could just be due to the rumours of audience research suggesting noone knew who Julie was. But after today and the way shes worked with Phil, I'd be surprised if she wasn't given a guest stint on This Morning.
I can't argue that Julie does seem to be top dog at ITV News, but I don't think Mark has been relegated. They'd never put a female presenter in the crowd like that. Mark is fairly tall and built but even he was struggling. Julie, Nina or Mary would get trampled allover!
It all depends on the type of event. Mark Austin is still the first choice to report live from a war zone, whereas you'd never see Huw Edwards in Iraq or somewhere.

We'll gloss over the BBC News countdown which shows Huw Edwards in Iraq then shall we .....!
That is quite true though - Huw much more of an anchor for state or political events rather than covering war or attending natural disasters. The BBC tend to use George for the latter, whilst I guess ITV counter Huw Edwards increasingly with Alastair Stewart.
Although Julie is clearly top dog now at ITV, I agree Mark is still their number one for such events - he was quite lucky really the War in Iraq took place just a few months after he replaced Dermot Murnaghan as it effectively made his name.
Is it just me or was the NAT (extended) closing theme played on the 6:30 tonight, seemed slightly longer, plus the ITN caption had the "RTS News Progamme of the Year" on it too, which only usually appears at the end of NAT. Accidental perhaps?

I don't think the NAT theme was played. But yes, the ITN/RTS endcap was accidentally played at the end of the 6:30.
Unrelated - but I can't really take News at Ten (or indeed ITV News as a whole) seriously anymore. I know we've had these discussions so often that it gets tiresome, but the few times I tune in (tonight being one of them), it's the same story time and time again... and I guess that's why posts in this thread have been lacking in recent weeks and months.
...does anybody know if ITV's news review is actually nearing completion yet? Although I appreciate that the emphasis will be on "how to get the news to make money for us" rather than correcting the deep editorial problems.

Oh well it just seemed a bit longer than usual, is there actually a different version of the closing theme or is it just extended I imagine.
On the 2nd point - I sort of agree, it's a shame as a few weeks ago - pre and post Royal wedding Royal was very good IMO and the wedding coverage itself shows that even small things like graphics and namestraps etc can be good.
