Anyone catch the "coming up at 6:30" preview ( during the local news as always). Instead of being sat at the desk, Alastair was standing next to the desk, in front of the right hand screen. Don't think there've done this before. I only say cause I think they should try it out on the opening of the news - certainly looked a lot better than about 20m away! Laughing

I didn't see it, but it certainly sounds like it would be better. It was ridiculous on NaT this evening having the sequence start with a few (powerful) images of the crowds in Cairo with voiceover from Julie, and then a cut to her stood a billion feet away from the desk, then a straight fade to titles.

From what I managed to catch of it, I thought the News at 6:30 today was quite good. Bill Neely gave a really good analysis of the situation, it was really pacey and informative - sadly though, I think tonight's NaT was a lot weaker than the 6:30 bulletin.

What next - you'll be calling for them to sit down!

I'm pretty sure too the intros are actually done next to the desk - it's just a bit of CSO trickery which makes it look like they're standing closer.

For those who missed it, this is how the 'Coming Up on the ITV News at 6:30' looked last night during the regional news;

I'd like to see a return to presenters standing at the start of the programme!

It's a green screen, isn't it? As there was a clip a few months back at the beginning of the programme where Julie was standing a million miles away, before the camera dropped, so her head went out of view, but the backdrop remained the same.

End of the Weekend Evening Bulletin ended with plenty of time to spare, wondered if it was going to be cut off but it was very quiet build up before the credits played and came to an end.
Catch it on ITV1+1

Take a look at the caps posted above - with a couple of tweaks, I personally think that would be a much better, more effective (and more realistic) opening shot.

Yes, I don't think the standing shot is done in the studio. That incident you are talking about involved Mary Nightingale and it was the start of the 6:30 news. She flew up into the air before gently coming back down to earth. Laughing I think they accidently played the rehearsal tape or something. But yes, the backdrop remained static.

I quite like this often forgotten music used for ITN bulletins in the early 90s

It's really odd how they used to just talk allover the top of the music in these weekend bulletins.

I'd forgotten about that HTV ident with the 'ice cream van' jingle! Laughing

The pre-title standing shot is actually done in the studio. The presenter stands to the left of the desk (from the viewer's perspective) against the green wall. The image of the presenter is then superimposed on to a wide shot of the studio minus the standing presenter (don't ask how, because I don't have a clue!!). They're literally feet away from the desk, hence why they can be seated again in a matter of seconds.

If they're to the left of the desk, then the superimposed image will cover up the view of their actual position, would it not?

The caps above prove to me that they shouldn't change a thing. The format used now is very distinctive and effective - the caps above just have them standing in the middle of the studio.

If they were to change it I think the shots used sometimes for the News at Ten promo of the host directly in front of the screen is better.

Yet another early close which left a longer entrance to the end of the bulletin. Also the main headline at the top of the programme was the 2nd story to be shown.
