Thanks for all the info on the studios, itsrobert - interesting reading.

That video of the NAT music is interesting, as the bong is wrong. That's not the one that was used on air. ITN must have supplied that themselves. I always thought the pre-1992 NAT theme was the best of the lot. Hewson's two versions (1992 and 2008) don't sound as powerful as the original did.

Don't forget that the NAT music heard in that video was the second re-recording: there was a very less powerful version in use from 1992 for a year or two (without the "dum-dum, dum-dum"! before the bongs) before the above music was put in use. Out of the two, I prefer the 1994 version.

I noticed the different bong effect too in the NAT video. How would you explain the musical differences in this video of the Early Evening News from 1995? I'm guessing it's an early, unrefined 'draft'.

Ah yes, there was a weaker version of the NAT theme used from the end of 1992 until early 1993. The 1993-1999 version was a bit more powerful, but I still don't think it's as effective as the original 1967-1992 music. That sent a shiver down your spine!

Hmm that 1995 music is rather strange. It's definitely not the version used on air. It sounds almost synthesised to me. It's certainly not as orchestral-sounding as the TX version.

By the way, while we're on the subject, what's your all-time favourite ITN news theme? For me, I think it's the News at 5:40 theme from the late 80s/early 90s. It's just so quaint. I also like the Weekend/Morning News music used around the same time. The "duh duh duh" one Smile

Mine would have to be the original 'First Report/News at One' theme, and then the weekend theme from the mid-80s. Have never been able to track down decent recordings of either thougth.

Oh yes, both of you have pretty much mentioned themes that I really like. Is the First Report/News at One theme library or not? I don't think it is, but I've never been able to find it either. Would love to come across it someday.

One of my real favourites is this one, used on the Lunchtime News for a number of years until the 1995 revamp (I think it was introduced in 1988/9):

This is the only decent clip I could find with this music. I'm positive that a longer version of that music was in use for quite a few years before they chopped it down to those measly ten seconds!

OMG - is that Kirsty Young in the regional news trail?

Believe it or not! Smile Strange to see her looking so young. (And I mean that in the nicest possible way...)

Surprised no-one else has picked up on this (although I notice MediaGuardian hasn't reported on this):

ITV, NBC to share foreign correspondents

I'm not keen on this constant promotion of Rohit Kachroo. He doesn't come across as the most professional of reporters. But, the new partnership with NBC certainly provides ITN with a lot of advantages with regards to reporting international events on ITV News.

I'm not too surprised by this development. ITV already use NBC News material, including reporters for their US based stories and I recently saw a report by Sally Biddulph about the snow in the UK on NBC Nightly News. What's more, NBC have had an operation at Grays Inn Road for a few years, so this was a natural step to take. I agree with you, though, that I don't see what all the fuss is about regarding Rohit Kacharoo. Not one of ITV's best reporters, in my humble opinion.

don't they realise how stupid giant chickens and eggs look behind the presenters in the studio.

in my opinion, is one of the best. Other like Bradby, Keir Simmons and Geraint Vincent are very opinonated and bias in their reports. Rohit gives the story as it is and don't socialise it.

I agree with you about Tom Bradby and Keir Simmons being weak reporters, but Rohit is just as weak even if he isn't opinionated. I can't see why they're parachuting him to the top. There is much more young talent at ITN, all of whom are miles better than Rohit and the other two: Chris Ship, Lucy Manning, Alex Forrest, Damon Green, Emily Morgan. And, if we were to include the stalwarts: Bill Neely, James Mates, Martin Geissler, John Irvine, Libby Weiner, Tim Ewart, Penny Marshall, etc.

I'm not sure this African posting is such a senior position. As an international posting it is obviously pretty senior, but Africa is hardly the most prominent international posting, and Africa is hardly the number one priority for ITV News currently. The position only seems to exist because NBC News will share the costs. Otherwise all African coverage would be from Dubai

And also it maybe that not many current ITV News staff were interested in an international posting. It wouldn't be for everyone

Still, at least this deal with NBC means ITV will retain an African correspondent. The Ivory Coast crisis and Sudan referendum show that the continent is in need of a based correspondent for a news organisation of ITV's size IMO

Some of you may have seen my post in the 'Vintage/Current News Presentation' thread. In it, I mentioned that VTM News in Belgium is launching its new look on Monday. Today, newspapers over there are printing images of the new studio - and it reminds me a little of ITV News, but with a better design... obviously Very Happy

If only ITV could do something like this...
