I think people can get too concentrated on the graphics that the ordinary viewer doesn't even notice - I'm more critical of the human approach nonsense to the news that ITV is continuing with. It's extremely cheesey and inappropriate.

I don't think there was too much emphasis on the human aspects in the ITV News at 1:30. They did include some political and financial news, alongside the Madeleine McCann, obesity and Wayne Rooney human interest-type stuff. I thought the balance was OK and a lot better than last night's ITV News at 6:30 and ITV News at Ten.

The graphics have grown on me, but the set certainly isn't.

I think the problem with the new set is that there's no sense of depth...one of the greatest features of the Theatre of News was the fact that it had great perspective, in both the atrium and London backdrops. Now, it's just a static backdrop with no sense of scale.

Shots like these look like they're in a broom cupboard CSO studio, while the old look had depth:

The wide shots look totally fake in the new studio, compared to the old look:

I don't see this lasting too long...the basic style may remain, but they're bound to tweak it.

ITV News At Ten's close seemed to feel as if the music from the beginning of the close was meant to be under what the presenters were saying, but wasn't, so I thought it was like the music was started to late.

I don't really see why every one is up in arms about the Nat. In my opinion, it is a humongous step FORWARD. All the bulletins look the same and this consistency really works in ITV's favour. Having diferent identities for diferent bulletins is utter madness and causes great confusion for the viewer. This new look is leaps and bounds above the old look with mismatching titles and theme tunes. All in all, the old News at Ten was no different to the other bulletins. the news was delivered in the same way, the only difference being the titles/theme tune so it never really had its own identity, it just looked out of sync with the rest of ITV news.

I've always hated the way they portray the set as a virtual reality. It makes everything seem fake, as if the programme wasn't real. I seem to trust physical studios and walls that actually exist...

Funny how viewers coped perfectly well for twenty or thirty years before the craze to make everything uniform came along...

But there wasn't the amount of bulleins for that many identities.

Can somebody please explain how this could be, in real terms, without marketing speak? I struggle immensely to see how exactly "great confusion" could have been caused by the most previous look, where in essence, the only difference was the lighting in the background, or indeed even by the more individualised look immediately prior. You turn on a channel at x hours, perhaps looking for the news. I can't exactly picture any wanton panic or confusion arising from, heaven forbid, seeing the news presented slightly differently on the same channel to how you saw it earlier. Give the masses some credit please.

As for this look IMO the music is mostly rubbish, and whatever about the BBC's identity being cold, this look is pretty frosty, even with the gold.

I've found out that last night's was a mistake. They had intended to play out a different closing theme for NaT with a longer build but it hadn't been sorted in time. It should be used tonight...

I completely agree. I much prefer a single, cohesive look. What other company has different branding for different products/services? These changes are a big improvement and it's only people who are stuck in the past that are criticising it. I'm surprised because these are the same people who have been banging on for a couple of years that ITV News needed revamping. I wouldn't mind, but there are still several strong links to the past in the new look but people still seem to be dissatisfied.

That was in an age of very limited competition. When all three bulletins on ITV had separate looks before 1995, the only real competition was the BBC and Channel 4. Sky News was just getting going and wasn't widely available. The BBC were the first to introduce a cohesive look in 1993 and they've never looked back. In this day and age, broadcasters just cannot afford to have a disparate brand. They have to stand out from the crowd.

I can recall, as a child and teenager, there being four main ITN bulletins a day - the Morning News at 5.30 as now, the Lunchtime News at 12.30, the Early Evening News at 5.40, and the News at Ten. All had entirely separate looks, until the first corporate look (desk with varying coloured light strip/Big Ben in the titles), arrived on our screens in the mid 1990s.

Quite frankly, I never got confused. Nobody else I knew was confused by this.

I've never particularly liked the term "dumbing down", but if people cannot cope with different programmes having their own look - if this upsets them and they cannot comprehend that it's all still on ITV, just a set of news bulletins with different coloured sets and graphics, then I really would despair.

Don't get me wrong, I understand WHY they go for one cohesive look. I even rather like it.

What I object to is the suggestion that it somehow confuses people. Even in this massively multichannel world, give them SOME credit.

Again, that was in an age of very limited competition. They could afford to market each programme as an individual entity. You didn't get confused because there were only two options - BBC or ITN. With the explosion of news channels and providers both on TV and online, it is no longer effective for each programme to look unique. The more exposure a cohesive brand gets, the more likely it is to be remembered. I was sceptical at the changes the BBC made in 2008, but I have to hand it to them - it has paid off. Whether you're watching BBC One, BBC World or North West Tonight; whether you're reading the news on the website or listening to it on the radio, you know it's BBC News. It has a cohesive and highly effective brand. You can't blame ITV for wanting to replicate the BBC's success.
