So a year on and I know the look still has it's critics, but I think ITV News should be applauded for sticking to their guns and not undoing it bit by bit in response to inevitable criticism.
Must say I did think the astons would be tweaked, the big headed opening shot dropped and perhaps the background tweaked to be given extra depth in the months following the relaunch - but on the whole I'm glad, presentational wise at least, ITV News stuck to their guns. Content wise though and it's still not quite where it should be.
Why should they be applauded for sticking to their guns? If anything, they should have corrected any mistakes as soon as they could - in one go, to avoid the "undoing bit by bit" you speak of. As far as the current look is concerned, my favourite aspect is the music. It's so much better than the tired 2006 theme which got old pretty quickly. I still find myself humming along to it...!

The studio design
could
use some depth. I know others have got used to it, but at times it can look too overly complicated. This is in contrast to the News at Ten studio, which appeared clean and modern as well as traditional. The current studio design should have been built upon those principles.
That said... I agree that
content
is the biggest problem ITV News has at the moment. Human interest works well on television news in small doses, but the brazen approach of the editor at the moment does them no favours. If anything it has damaged ITV News' appearance, credibility and audience figures - and even when they come up with a well-rounded, authoritative news story/scoop/exclusive, it's lost among people's opinions of ITV News as a weaker alternative to the BBC. Let's not forget that ITV's news once rated higher than the Beeb's... of course we're going back a few years now. Still think that the mix was perfect from early-to-summer 2009 when gimmicks were kept to a minimum under the deputy editor.
I think that it will take a long time for ITV News to recover from this, even if a new editor comes along with a better and more workable/popular approach to stories. And I hope a new direction comes sooner rather than later!
