People have suggested recently that the ITV Morning News should be moved to 6am to help Daybreak's ratings

Surely cutting out a period with a low audience figure simply to boost the average of the remaining shortened programme is a desperate move?

That's not going to provide any additional viewers at all: it will simply distort the comparison with BBC Breakfast, which has a single programme from 06:00-09:15.

Desperate - perhaps, but a very good tactical move, not only in shortening the show and taking out that low rating period, but also meaning they have half an hour less to fill so hopefully resulting in a tighter show.

A couple of complications though - firstly I guess the budget for the Morning News would have to shift from ITV Plc to ITV Breakfast Ltd, and secondly considering Daybreak news has it's own identity a bit of a conflict there. Is ITN even providing the Daybreak news service or is it from the same producers (Reuters?) as GMTV?

I could be wrong on this, but I'm fairly certain Daybreak's news is produced internally by the programme itself, although it does have full access to any ITN content generated for ITV News (and vice versa).

So a year on and I know the look still has it's critics, but I think ITV News should be applauded for sticking to their guns and not undoing it bit by bit in response to inevitable criticism.

Must say I did think the astons would be tweaked, the big headed opening shot dropped and perhaps the background tweaked to be given extra depth in the months following the relaunch - but on the whole I'm glad, presentational wise at least, ITV News stuck to their guns. Content wise though and it's still not quite where it should be.

Why should they be applauded for sticking to their guns? If anything, they should have corrected any mistakes as soon as they could - in one go, to avoid the "undoing bit by bit" you speak of. As far as the current look is concerned, my favourite aspect is the music. It's so much better than the tired 2006 theme which got old pretty quickly. I still find myself humming along to it...! Embarassed The studio design could use some depth. I know others have got used to it, but at times it can look too overly complicated. This is in contrast to the News at Ten studio, which appeared clean and modern as well as traditional. The current studio design should have been built upon those principles.

That said... I agree that content is the biggest problem ITV News has at the moment. Human interest works well on television news in small doses, but the brazen approach of the editor at the moment does them no favours. If anything it has damaged ITV News' appearance, credibility and audience figures - and even when they come up with a well-rounded, authoritative news story/scoop/exclusive, it's lost among people's opinions of ITV News as a weaker alternative to the BBC. Let's not forget that ITV's news once rated higher than the Beeb's... of course we're going back a few years now. Still think that the mix was perfect from early-to-summer 2009 when gimmicks were kept to a minimum under the deputy editor.

I think that it will take a long time for ITV News to recover from this, even if a new editor comes along with a better and more workable/popular approach to stories. And I hope a new direction comes sooner rather than later!

I like the music , The studio reminds me a bit of the setanta sports news studio which was also provided by ITN although this design was most likley to brand it with the rest of ITV 1 , However I wish News at Ten would go back to there old titles and set because at that time it was better than BBC Nrws at Ten. That studio was the best ITV News studio I think we have seen.

Content is an Issue with the exception of the weekend news which rounds up the news of the weekend quite well. and News at 1:30 which has good interviews and analyst’s for the news the news the 6:30 and 10 are both full of gimmicks and the reports have a habit of sometimes just being Tom Bradbury interpreting things in an over dramatic fashion . At 6 and 10 I have been watching BBC News recently and I find it much more detailed, less gimmicks and presented in a way which I would expect.
A other issue presenters don’t seem to be sticking to there actual role you can have any combo of Mark/Alistair/James , Nina/Mary/Julie on the 6:30 and 10 , so much so you cant call Mary a main presenter of the 6:30 because Julie appears as much same the other way around .

Who? Oh Tom Bradby.

As regards to the presenters they usually do stick to their bulletins, this week was half term and it was clear that Julie had time off so Mary was doing News At Ten. And I don't think saying Mary is not presenter of the News at 6.30 is true as Mary does present the news at 6.30 regularly give or take one or two days. The other thing is that usually the Friday presenters at 6.30 do NaT so this usually results in the other two presenters doing one extra bulletin during the week.

Sorry Spelling Error over Tom's Name

I was hoping Brekkie's post would lead to some proper discussion between members about presentation and content... there is a rota thread for presenter talk!

i'll give it a try. I dislike the hammy tone of some of their younger reporters who seem to think its as much about them as the story: Tom Bradby, Stephen Douglas, Keir Simmons, Rohit Kachroo. thank god Bill Neely, Penny Marshall, Robert Moore and Lawrence McGinty are still there
