I actually agree with you - I wasn't trying to mount a defence of ITV News or its Editor in Chief (and agree that any general lack of standing of ITV News over the last 10 years or so has to be the ultimate responsibility of the Editor).

I just thought your original comment seemed to suggest that somehow the quality of ITV News (however high or low one views it) had somehow been compromised by more effort and energy being spent on preparing for the performance in Edinburgh.

Yeah, why waste your time trying to lead your team into producing a world-class news service when you can concentrate all your energies on being the most bizarre-looking centrepiece of some irrelevant competition.

We are indeed. Smile Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Not to continue what others may deem as, at times, repetitive discussion, but I was hoping that the recent change of hands within the management of ITV would, directly or indirectly, lead to some other (well-needed) changes being brought about for ITV News. It appears that, editorially-speaking, that isn't going to happen any time soon - IIRC Adam Crozier said something along the lines of "I think we should be great at news... there'll be no superficial changes... we'll be looking at how we can make the news work commercially for us", which doesn't exactly translate as wanting to improve (or safeguard, for that matter) the quality of the national news...

I hadn't checked out the ITV News Blogs in a few days, but just noticed this blog from John Ray which confirms his not staying in China and although it's not exactly clear by the sounds of it perhaps returning to the UK.

Quote:
An apology to my regular reader for the brief pause in this blog. Posts-poned, you might say, by the birth of my second child, though to be fair most of the hard labour was not mine to bear.........
Yet I have one great regret as I prepare to leave this country after four years . Neither of my boys will remember the experience, nor will they have been here long enough to speak the language.

So that's why Angus is the new China Correspendant. I wonder if John Ray will be leaving ITV News or staying and getting a UK post? UK editor?

ITN is to open a new ITV News bureau in Dubai under its newly appointed international correspondent John Irvine, and will downgrade its presence in South Africa.

Irvine, ITV News's former Washington correspondent, will have a role covering stories across the Indian subcontinent, Africa and the Gulf region.

The South Africa bureau will be closed but ITV News will retain a production presence in Johannesburg. The Dubai bureau is ITV News's first new operation overseas since the opening of its China bureau in 2006.

Irvine's appointment to the newly created position is part of a reshuffle of the broadcaster's foreign correspondents after a review of its international operations.

ITN's former South Africa correspondent Martin Geissler replaces Robert Moore as Europe correspondent , with Moore switching to the Washington job, a role he previously held between 2001 and 2006.

John Ray becomes Middle East correspondent , having overseen the launch of ITN's China operations in advance of the Beijing Olympics, with the UK editor, Angus Walker, taking his first foreign role as China correspondent .

So I think the only role it doesn't mention is who will replace Angus as UK Editor.

Kier seems to be the favourite and Damon Green doing storys at the old bailey recently so my guess is he will be crime correspondent. I would have gone for Geiraint Vincent with the amount of big storyshes covered.

I think this is due to Nina being on Holiday. Alastair is now back on at 1:30 because him and Mark are both back. James in now covering for Nina.

Was romilly presenting last friday? - I was on holdiay.
