Brand realignment onwards (October 2009)

This is one of the reasons I've stopped posting as much in this thread. It was bad enough in the first place but, quite frankly, it's turned into a playground. There used to be some quite decent discussion about presentation and branding, but that has cleared the way for inane speculation on who's presenting what and why they haven't taken a ten-hour rest, concern about the personal feelings and egos of reporters and the full-blown childish sniping between the more... less mature members of TV Forum.

There are a couple of members who could do with being brought down a peg or two.

Quite frankly it isn't just confined to this one thread, I used to enjoy using this forum to read and occasionally would contribute however of the last few months its getting tedious.
From asking whether the summer holidays have started to scruntinising and nit-picking, this forum is turning into a playground and from what I can see many users who proclaim to be adults are posting comments and rants that I expect from my kid nephew
Respect and support other users guys and gals, if you have problems with someones opinions, grammar or punctuation take it up with them directly (pm) rather than resorting to slanging matches on the forums, its adding nothing to topic

Exactly which is why we should go back to talking about ITV News.

Or, more specifically, the presentation of ITV News.

Out of interest how is News at Ten doing for content these days? I don't see it often, but have they reverted the black-and-yellow era dumbing down of the flagship or is it much on par with Deborah Turness' change in direction?

It's my opinion of course, but I would say it's near enough the same as the 6:30 bulletin nowdays. Mabye one extra story. Sometimes if the 6:30 leads on a more dummed down subject, NAT will lead on a more serious topic.

You do get the odd "special" thing especialy for NAT like the Batttle of Britian thing these past few weeks but not much apart from that.

I must say that there are odd nights in which the programme seems credible. Last night's edition, for example, placed a decent amount of emphasis on international news and for the most part let the facts speak for themselves.

But generally? No, it still is the same watered-down bulletin it has been for almost a year with verbal and visual gimmicks taking precedence. I know many on here have grown to accept and like the yellow/black colour scheme, but I still feel that it's far from perfect. I think it's one of those things that looks perfectly acceptable on paper, but the execution is very poor. And, above everything else, the content has declined.

Bringing viewing figures into the equation... the "old" News at Ten (that is to say, pre-November) is noteworthy because viewership was gradually increasing over time, averaging 3m (or thereabouts) by late last year. It's very telling that, since the 'realigning' of the brand, viewership has stopped increasing and has levelled at 2m. In fact, some nights it only manages 1.5m when the BBC's Ten is getting three times that figure. This time last year, the programme was in a much healthier position.

Yeah, why waste your time trying to lead your team into producing a world-class news service when you can concentrate all your energies on being the most bizarre-looking centrepiece of some irrelevant competition.

I think that's a little unfair. Whatever your opinion of ITV News (and I agree with many of the comments you've posted previously) - this really was just a bit of fun that was squeezed in - much like when BBC News appear on Children in Need.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that completely - I've nothing against these random bits of fun happening now and again. And to bring the point round to ITV News itself ...

... I have nothing against the editor personally, but rather the way the service comes across on-screen, and I can only judge from what comes across on screen. Everything written by people who know her well has been nothing less than complimentary, so she must be a very good person to get on with and work alongside. But it is rather telling that, despite other news services (on television and other mediums) retaining - among other things - ratings and respect in a very weird and wonderful era for journalism, ITV News has struggled (and I think that's a fairly accurate term) to retain either over the past half decade under her leadership. I don't think all the 'bad' things that have happened to ITV News are down to her, certainly not - but she has a hell of a lot of input, as editor, doesn't she?
