No one is saying drop the whole evening - all we're saying is they could have stuck with it for half an hour considering they spent two hours building up to it. The 7.30pm slot is usually ad free anyway, and Tuesday night is ITV's worst of the week.

As a commercial channel all their newsflash did after Emmerdale is send viewers off to search for coverage elsewhere, rather than attempt to keep viewers with ITV.

Exactly!

Mark promoted a News Special at 9pm. Will be interesting to see how much else they miss out on.

I wouldn't be getting your hopes up for a news special, more likely it will be a 30" update.

I do think that something's not quite right when ITV are not covering the transition of power. It's a historic moment in the history of the UK... and they're showing a quiz show!

I agree.

And just think how frustrating it is for ITN/ITV News staff to not be able to report on this moment of history.

It's really sad.

So there'll miss the Bill but not - millioniare!!

Well it is a special episode - it's using member of the general public!

Stupid though - they may have missed the speech but over 90 minutes from 7.30-9pm they'd have had all the main developments live. I tell you - Labour leaves Government and all ready ITV has abandoned it's PSB values! Bloody Tories! Very Happy

I agree also, Mark, Julie etc must feel like they have their hands tied behind their back. Programming on ITV1 tonight isn't particularly important so should have been dropped.

It is prime time, the time that advertisers pay the most for. Perhaps ITV can't afford to drop the adverts.

At times like these, you really feel for those like Julie Etchingham, who would get to cover these events in full if she had remained at Sky or the BBC. Shame.

Would showing news cost ITV1 any money other than lost advertising revenue? What I mean is, the people at ITN are still being paid for not broadcasting when they must be willing and able to. Why couldn't ITV put the news out on ITV2,3 or 4?

It's ITV's weakest night of the week - if this was going to happen in primetime, ITV couldn't have scheduled it better.

By not sticking with the news at 7.30pm all they've done is gift a massive ratings victory to the BBC. Yes, the BBC would have beat them anyway, but ITV would have taken it's fair share.

Your assuming that everyone is interested in this though, as important as it is I'm sure there is broad range of viewers who were hunting for an alternative to watch.

How depressing. One of the most dramatic and decisive events to occur in Britain and what do ITV have to show for it? A couple of newsflashes. Very sad that ITN lost out at the chance of providing a decent analysis of this evening's events as they so well do at times like this.
