Mark did mention that News at Ten was the next "scheduled" bulletin, so I still hope they'll see sense and break into coverage with a special programme at some point before 10pm.
To tell us what exactly? News flashes replacing promos would be adequate.
It's interesting that they didn't dip into more rolling coverage after it, considering they've been so keen on doing that the past couple of evenings. Mind you there wasn't much left for them to broadcast at that point seeing as they missed the main event.
Children's Hospital was surely an easy candidate to drop?!
I agree, but I'm not sure speculating for half an hour is adding anything that hasn't already been covered ad nauseam. Since they haven't dropped Children's Hospital can't imagine they will be dropping a 60' programme.

Idiocy.
Red tape is what this is called. I am sure ITN went to the network with a request and were told they could not break into Emmerdale and were given that ridiculous 2 minute slot. From my own experience of working in news, and certainly as far as ITN is concerned.. there is serious frustration in the newsroom when a request to run a news report is denied. They are fighting a losing battle.
I'm probably getting a bit ahead of myself, but with itv allowing itv news to break stories, and adding special programmes could result into a boost in ratings for itv news. If this is the case it could be a
trial
for a news channel.
Even if not dipping out of Emmerdale they should surely of dropped Childrens Hospital and kept the inheritance from Emmerdale. Really though they could have easily broken into Emmerdale and come back to it at 7.45pm or so for the second part. Shameful decision by ITV.

surely they should have cut in the middle of Emmerdale , then when the speech had finished go back to Emmerdale!!

ITV News always miss the main events! To be honest, I've been loving the way ITN have delivered this since polling night. It's quite shocking that normal programming prevails over such important and relevant stories.
When Thatcher resigned, most only had a 4 channel system. Now most have digital television. ITV are doing the good thing by not annoying people who have recorded Emmerdale, and its pretty obvious that most will switch over to BBC or Sky's coverage anyway.

I assume this didn't happen today, but in the situation you describe above, could STV and/or UTV take the News Special that ITV were offering?
