It happened a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday, also presented by Alex Hyndman. Todays lunchtime bulletin was scheduled with 20 minutes remember, so it was expected by myself. I do think they should do these with all the weekend lunchtime bulletin's as they are usually 15 minutes. Next weeks Saturday lunchtime bulletin is also 20 minutes.
It was rather strange to see Alex on a saturday, however I think it is better if they have a separate newscaster for the weekend lunchtime bulletins, not just a Sunday.
Todays lunchtime bulletin had a normal opening sequence (as with the weekend evening bulletins). Is this normal? Last Sunday lunchtime was just a summary with a very short opening sequence and no headlines.

Alex will probably go onto present London Tonight, I think and probably somebody will correct me but the longer bulletin times are there because This Morning: Saturday and Sunday is doing so well the news bulletin before might be getting better ratings.

I suppose it's a logical reason, however If I remeber correctly, the bulleins usually started at 12:00 on a Saturday, so I think the previous programming may be shorter - meaning they need to fill the gap

Exactly. I don't think ITV think much to the weekend lunchtime bulletins other than something that they have to show. Some weekends, it runs only 5 minutes and others, like today, it runs to 15 minutes. It's essentially filler material from the viewpoint of ITV bosses.

If regional bulletins were extended, we would just be overloaded with sport, on calendar anyway.
I'd imagine their expanded length is mainly due to the election campaign. Surprised the weekend regional bulletins haven't been extended too to compensate for the time lost to the Party Political Broadcasts during the week.

Will the regional news have to be extended at some point in the year to make up for the time lost to Party Political Braodcasts, or is an allowance made for them under the Ofcom rules about the amount of regional news shown in primetime?
Also I do wonder what the point of a weekend lunchtime bulletin is in the weeks when its only 5 minutes. So long as BBC1 has a lunchtime bulletin, it seems a bit pointless IMO when you have two news channels as well showing lunchtime bulletins of at least 30 minutes in length. I'm guessing its an Ofcom requirement? (Though I do realise someone would still have to be on 'standby' for breaking news)

Don't start going down the route of "what's the point when BBC1 is doing it?". I agree five minutes isn't really worth the effort, but there is a place for them - especially on Sunday when the BBC's bulletin is within the Politics Show rather than a bulletin in it's own right.
I also think they work quite well for people channel hopping at the weekends. You flick through the EPG and see ITV1 are showing the news shortly so tune in for that, and 30 minutes later discover you've sat trhough half an hour of the Planet's Funniest Animals.

what VR on location? are you talking about the "battle board" for the election?
I have to say that I do like the VR that ITV are doing out on location. Not sure how it works but it's very clever. The BBC VR looks a bit stale by comparison.
