I suspect we might see her crop up on different things over time - but it's quite possible she'd rather be doing this type of work than newsreading (It's quite possibly not challenging for some people after so long).

I can imagine Katie Derham-fronted documentaries appearing on BBC Two and Four, maybe even work on a The Review Show (formerly Newsnight Review)-type programme.

Good for Katie if this is what she wants to do. But I do think she is one of the very few newsreaders who seems to please everyone - calm, smooth presentation, including when interviewing, a bubbly personality that doesn't conflict with the news, great looks, none of the celebrity-oriented ways of Kaplinsky or Silverton and none of the negative on-screen temprements of some others (a la Huw Edwards and the way he sometimes seems to lean over the desk rather than sit up, or Andrew Marr who likes to wave his arms around).

I just hope the BBC use her to the fullest potential she wants - I'd personally love Derham on a programme like Newsnight (should any of the current ones leave) or a Sunday-morning show.

You've just summed up Katie in a nutshell there

It's a shame Katie is leaving, it's also a shame that she is moving to a niche role meaning she is practically leaving the screens entirely. I'm surprised she wouldn't want to keep some sort of news role at ITV even if reduced.

It does sound like shes entering a golden handcuffs deal so its probably not possible. If a vacancy does come up at BBC News, I'm sure if shes interested she'll go for it or at least the BBC will consider her. Whats worth remembering is that she is being paid £250,000 which is more than her current contract at ITN. So for less work, it makes sense for her. And her radio show etc is successful so she already has a safety net.

I agree with the above poster about Katie on Newsnight. She'd make a far better relief presenter than Emily currently does. But its whether Katie is simply bored of newsreading or not. She might want new challenges as she approaches 40. At times like this when we're discussing possibilities, its often easy to forget we are speaking about real people and ultimately its up to them what they want to do.

I could see her co-hosting the Six with George actually, but I don't think the BBC will be wanting to go down the route at the moment. She'll probably crop up on The One Show at some point though.

Alastair Stewart anchors ITV’s coverage of the tightest election in decades, and it promises to be a night of high drama.

The programme starts with a national exit poll, giving first indications of the likely result. Correspondents across the UK will report live from key seats, and follow the major party leaders as the shape of the new Parliament unfolds.

Just across the river from Westminster, Mary Nightingale has an unparalleled gathering of guests from all walks of public life.

Julie Etchingham takes charge of ITV’s best ever computer graphics, and there’s live analysis all night from Political Editor Tom Bradby and election analyst Prof Colin Rallings.

Awww boooo. Both presenters are back in the studio!

Haha. Ok we all knew it had to come to an end, but I like the one studio presenter, one on location presenter set up.

Sounds like Katie isn't involved in the election, is her departure much sooner than we think? We'll find out when ITV announce it tomorrow.

And I'm sure we'll have the 1 presenter on location set up returning tomorrow.

I am off to Bolton tomorrow for a special ITV News at Ten reaction programme to the Sky debate

Mark also fluffed his lines saying about this, when an image was up , saying debates wrong and then saying "i'll do that again" and then he didn't, then abrubtly going to Julie. Laughing

As I posted earlier today , tomorrow's NAT is biled as " News At Ten & Debate highlights" and is on from 10 till 11.

The trailer for tomorrow's NAT was obviously pre-recorded and it seems as though they played out the wrong version (i.e. a previous take) by mistake.

I've seen a trail telling me to join News At Ten after the Debate.

Ahh, a sad day for ITV news, but it has to be said - I feel Katie has been overlooked time and time again over recent years. She was shunted over to London Tonight and for a short time rarely made appearances on ITV News. ITN brought in Mary Nightingale over Katie and more recently Julie. It's not surprising she's off somewhere else. ITN nurtured her to what she is now - one of the best female news presenters in the business. She was 27 or 28 when she first read a bulletin on ITV, a pretty good innings.

I certainly wish her well and hope she'll crop up on BBC News in the not so distant future.

Fast-paced News at Ten - quite enjoyable watching the opinion poll results being delivered - but it would be so much more classy with the old simple and effective branding. Too much yellow and too much inconsistency with text size!
