Are they using the wrong backdrop on the news now? It looks much darker than usual and the look 'outside' (past the panels) is black in some shots when its usually greyish.

I noticed the same problems too. In addition, the desk was tinted green, the yellow 'squares' on the front were orange rather than yellow, and the glass of the desk reflected only Katie Derham and her papers - it looked as if the glass had been cut out of the desk as we could see the bottom parts of the 'walls' and the floor.

This entire same thing happened a few weeks ago when James Mates was presenting the lunchtime news (ironically also a Wednesday) and it was put down to power problems or another fire alarm or something like that.

EDIT - re: backdrop. Perhaps they were using the much darker News at Ten one by mistake?
Random bit of nonsense - one of my family members glanced at the TV during the close of the programme and remarked, "it looks like walls with damp patches on them" and said they preferred how it "used to look". Can't say I disagree.. Smile

Sounds like they're in studio 1 - most likely due to election rehearsals.

god they need to get their fire alarm fixed Laughing

We had a spate of false alarms at work a couple of years ago - cause? Cleaners not watching the toaster in the staff room. Wasn't a big issue for them , bit of taking the piss out of the culprit while stood outside for 5 mins. It did however have a big effect on our bar and catering outlets in lost custom and wastage, along with several complaints about the fire alarm system.

Solution? Move the toaster to a ventilated, food prep area. Fire alarm "fixed".

That said we're currently having issues with a leaking pipe under a floor dripping into a smoke detector below (which doesn't set the alarm off but upsets it a lot). But 90% of our alarms are lovely drunk customers checking to see if our break glass units actually work, virtually none are caused by faults/problems/failures in the alarm system.

Yes, I didn't like the new look back in November and then I grew to like it. But now I think it looks really horrible and dated. Its a shame they couldn't tweak their old look for the "brand realignment" for example giving the illusion of a coloured filter over the backdrop.

Quite ironic that its the same colours used by Marmite.

why want alastair presenting 1:30 news on mon and tue. I don't think James is the best choice, however I think it is because they are changing weekend bulletins to one fixed presenter (Nina last weekend, steve this weekend)

Because you cant expect to Alistair to present 3 bulletins and a summary in two days and go on to present 4 other bulletins on Wednesday andf Thursday

I agree, it was quite radical when introduced but I got used to the freshness of it. The old ITV News look had dated severely and the new look was much needed. But all of a sudden this new look seems very dull and very flat, in stark comparison to the panoramic skyline design which gave ITV News the authority it had lacked for so long.

And watching News at Ten tonight, it just feels as if they've gone back to 2007. Everything that was good about this programme has gone, if you excuse the 'And Finally' tag. It's so generic - right down to the camera angles and fluffy language.

The orange 'and finally' strap is pretty much the same as the old NaT one, I think that could have been some kind of base for tweaking the old look to fit ITV branding, and when it was introduced across all of the bulletins it was only there for around 7 or 8 months before it was dropped. It seemed a bit pointless really- I think the November relaunch actually would have worked much better if the atrium was kept from Feb-November, because then it wouldn't be like downgrading!

And we'll well and truly be back to 2007 come Britain's Got Talent week. Apparently its going live a week later this year so it won't be airing on bank holiday Monday, and of course this year NaT is now on Fridays. I can't exactly see them moving the Monday/Thursday/Friday soap blocks and instead they'll shunt the news back to 10.30pm that week.

Yes, he was credited on the Channel 4 News titles as well (he's retiring). Nice touch I thought.

Thanks for the info, that makes sense then - like you say a nice touch for him.

Just without knowing that, seemed a bit strange! Laughing
