ITV are doing this as part of their Presenters in Power initiative.
To get the presenters more involved in the news, one of them has to activate the first bong themselves. Tonight, it was Mary's turn, with her head. Tomorrow, my sources tell me that there will a belly-bounce bong - but who will it be?
Brilliant!

Yes, this is pre-recorded. I think either the wrong take was sent to traffic or simply the wrong version played out. T'was funny though.

Well, Alistair is moving in the background - perhaps they record 10 seconds of that shot, and then project it on the CSO when Mary does her lead? I also thought she just stood in the left hand corner of the set...but it doesn't seem that way now.
Well that ruined the illusion
However it does make you think, is Mary genuinely stood where it looks, or is she in front of a green screen with a static camera image projected behind her? I always just believed she was stood in the corner of the studio.

Forgive the exceptionally crude graphic (and obviously it's green screen behind the desk not blue screen), but hopfully this will show what's going on -

Basically you have a shot of Mary against a green screen, with a live shot of the desk with Alistair sat at it keyed onto it. But - before you key the desk on, you run it through the virtual studio software, giving you a full frame image to use as the background, like so:

Very bizarre thing to do in the first place, having one of the newscasters stand so far away from the desk at the top of the programme. I think having a picture of the story works much better, which is what all bulletins used to do pre-Nov and what the 1:30 and weekend bulletins still do now.
Tomorrow's budget coverage is titled "Ballot Box Budget" - alliteration for alliteration's sake! They should've stuck to the simpler title they use all the time in the listings, "The Chancellor's Budget". What's the betting that it'll look as generic as a weekend bulletin??

It is, if they insist on a shot of a presenter stood up before the titles then I think it would look a lot better if the shot was similar to that used on the News at Ten trailer during the 6.30 news. As someone said when ITV relaunched, sorry realigned, its as though Mary or whoever is telling us a secret that the other isn't meant to hear.
