I always thought it would be better to substitute the bongs with a percussion sound or something, reserving the chimes exclusively for News at Ten (as was the case pre-99).
After all, they seemed to create a really strong brand identity for ITV news bulletins in 1995, cleverly tying it together with News at Ten without even using the bongs.
They missed the bongs out once before and it sounded quite good actually.

This was caused by the failure of a couple of their video playout machines prior to TX. The bongs are triggered by the vision mixer when the bong wipe is deployed, hence why they weren't used. The machine that plays the endcap was also affected.

No bongs in the headline sequence on the late news at 23:35, apart from the one chime just after the voiceover. I thought it worked quite well (seeing as Big Ben doesnt chime on the half-hour, contrary to ITV News thinking...) but it might not have been intended - there was no sting, just a second wide shot of the studio. No ITN endcap at the end either, just a fade to black.

Talking of end caps, I wish ITN would switch to the much nicer "ITN Productions" version they use online with the smaller logo in the centre of the screen, rather than the huge and sometimes inappropriately garish endcap.

Has a simple but very nice animation too which you can see on any of the ITN vids on YouTube.

I wish they'd stick to the blue end cap as well, given that is the official 'ITN News' colour (rather than the various other palettes which relate to the company's other divisions - like Productions, Source and Consulting etc).

the best 630 news since nov, nina and alastair, along with geraint, romilly and chris ship.

Well perhaps the best since Tuesday, but I wouldn't like to cast aspersions on Wednesday's and Thursday's programmes.

Presumably because Alastair wasn't there.
It appears to be that Alastair or Mary will lead the 6.30pm News if either of them is there, and Mark or Julie will lead the News at Ten if either of them is there, otherwise Mark will lead the 6.30pm News if he is reading it with Katie, or Julie will lead if she is reading it with James, and Alastair will lead the News at Ten if he is reading it with Katie, or Mary will lead if she is reading it with James.
As arrangements go that is rather absurd, as highlighted by the typically brilliant job that Katie did covering for both Mary and Julie earlier in the week. The only way in which her presentation of the 6.30pm News and News at Ten is inferior to those bulletins' regular presenters is in frequency, and that itself is a big mistake.
