...but wrong. "Not enough news" (!) Commercial breaks within the news generally happen on football nights, as posted above, predominantly for the viewing figure reason.

ITV1 has 40 minutes of ads to screen between 6pm and 11pm. As they can screen 12 minutes an hour usually most of these are shown between 7-10pm, but when football is on they can't meet the quota in those hours, so hence show the extra breaks in the news.

10 minutes of this mornings 530 news was in HD, using images from sky and itvhd for sport and bill neelys report was also HD

Really? Are you sure it was native HD, and not just SD upscaled to HD?

Just because something's shown on an HD channel doesn't make it HD.

ITV News doesn't broadcast in HD.

Itv hd only works on freesat when the actual programming is in hd. It was just the sport from itv hd last night, and a few other games from sky, as well as bills report. it was much clearer.

ITN's gallery is not HD, so it would have a job being HD.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it definitely would not have been HD. Yes, the original content may have been HD but the pictures you saw were coming via ITN and they do not currently output in HD. I accept the picture may have been clearer as the source was a HD broadcast, but I'm afraid you were still watching an SD broadcast.
