I expect Nina will appear on London Tonight as well. Alex Hyndman has been the main female presenter for the past couple of months.

I never knew she did London Tonight, I thought that was only Katie. But if she returns to one she'll probably return to the other.

With all the females they have (which have shown in the past few months they are quite necessary) they should take it as a message to do a shake up with the presenters to stop any situations like that in the future. That could also mean two presenters on the later bulletins at the weekend, almost 6m people watched Saturdays 10pm bulletin so perhaps they should have used that opportunity to promote News at Ten.

Alex has been the main LT presenter since November I think. I take it she replaced both Katie and Salma Siraj?

Why on earth would they need two presenters for a 10-15 minute weekend bulletin when they're already having to share sentences on the longer weekday bulletins.

If anything it's some of the weekday bulletins which need to cut back down to one - certainly the Lunchtime News at least.

The Lunchtime News works best with Alastair and Katie, not one on their own. Its a very light hearted bulletin, both presenters work well together and it suits the daytime audience very well.

Clearly the point I was trying to make went right over your head. I meant there should be News at Ten at weekends, perhaps on a Sunday. The DOI thing on Saturday gave Saturday's 10pm bulletin a good lead in and almost 6m viewers. Perhaps by putting News at Ten on a Sunday after Dancing on Ice it could be beneficial to the weekday bulletins. Obviously I thought people on here were intelligent enough to work out something along those lines from what I said.

When Nina Returns (When?) Katie Will Probably Return To London Tonight. Mary Will Present The EN Mon-Thursday, Julie on NaT and on Friday Nina, Romilly or even Lucy if they decide to keep her on.

Well that's the way it was, with Katie presenting the Lunchtime News and London Tonight from Monday to Thursday and Mary the Evening News from Monday to Thursday, with Friday almost being treated as part of the weekend, but if the people responsible for such decisions are able to demonstrate at least a modicum of good judgement they will make as much use of Katie on the higher-profile national bulletins as possible.

It would seem like something of a backward step if everything were just to return to the way it was six months ago.

I've always rated Katie higher than Nina, and indeed it was somewhat of a snub a few years back when Nina was bought in as cover for Mary when she went on maternity. On the whole though ITV News have a pretty decent portfolio of presenters at the moment.

Lucy Meacock presenting the LN today. Seems strange, as she has only presented Granada Reports twice this week and has been off from Granada for at least a week. But it is good to see her on the national news this week.

Well Katie, along with Alastair, are the main presenters on the Lunchtime News (and London Tonight) whereas Nina, as a relief presenter, has to accept being moved around to fill in the gaps, so that probably wasn't too difficult to rationalise.

More interesting, though unquestionably none of our business, would be to find out how the arrival of Julie was handled. There were rumours of Mark and Mary's pay being raised and I suspect that both Mary and Julie have been fed variations on the idea that they're the 'No.1 female newsreader' but, in my opinion, if Katie were to leave it would be a far greater loss to ITV News than either Mary or Julie doing so. That said, I agree with your assertion that they have a pretty decent bunch of presenters so significant changes seem unlikely.

Its quite ironic how they'll be going from understaffed with females to overstaffed in the space of about 2 months. With Nina returning they should use the opportunity to have a mini reshuffle of presenters. I think all of the bulletins should follow in News at Ten's lead and have main presenters for each programme from Monday-Thursday and have different sets for Friday's. I know they already do that sometimes but maybe they should do it on a weekly basis. Also perhaps they could benefit from having two presenters on Friday's late bulletin just to uniform all of the main bulletins across the week. But I do definitely agree that Katie should be first choice for EN cover, especially over Nina.

For those who want a little bit of TV's past to return, can those nay- sayers stop calling it "rose tinted spectacles".

I looked at a particular interview a broadsheet newspaper had had with John Suchet last year and John remarked that the ITV News brand is destroying ITN's legacy. There was a bit more to it.
Unfortunately, I cannot find the article but I will keep looking. I did notice it was on the internet the last time I looked at it last month.

Referring to John Suchet, sad news about dementia relating to he and his wife. John said on TV: "I want no sympathy......" but it is hard not to feel sorry for him being visibly upset and his voice breaking with emotion.
