If it was permissible to have a break during News at Ten in the old days then why is it not OK now? I also noticed that, unusually, there wasn't a break during the News at 6:30 yesterday either.
They have to consider when they can get the most eyes on those adverts. Presumably there would be significantly more viewers at the end of Cilla than there would be in the middle of NaT.
If you google SOCI (Share Of Commercial Impacts, i.e. one pair of eyes watching a commercial for 30 seconds) and CRR (Contractual Rights Renewal) etc you'll find an awful lot of information on some of the way ITV has to run the commercial side of it's business. Of course Ofcom have produced mounds of regulation surrounding these matters too.
Looks like STV never opted out of the network after the football as we got 'Coming Up Next on NaT' instead of the usual Scotland Tonight promo...

You'll notice programmes before, and particularly after, The X Factor will have a minimal, if zero, ad load in order to allow The X Factor to run with the amount of ads it does. This is most prevalent when the live shows begin.
The fact that there are never adverts around 6-7pm any day of the week is most noticeable example of this. As they can save up peak time adverts for higher rating parts of peak time.
Noticeable exceptions to this is like tonight when football dominates the evening, they will run ads in that time slot.
It seems since the last ITV News website refresh, it is now being referenced to in the bulletins, something I do not think they used to do. Would be great to have a graphic like the BBC to show viewers.

It makes sense now the ITV News website is even better.
ITV News at When? Three out of five nights this week, ITV News at 10 is on at a different time. I don't want to sound like a broken record, as I know this has been brought up before, but how can ITV News come across as a credible news source if ITV shove it around the schedules for entertainment?
Well Monday was due to a special event and the last two days it was moved due to a major landmark drama.
At the end of the day, they move it a lot at this time of year because the programmes that the air help to pay for ITV News throughout the whole year. Come January it will be at 10 every night without exception.
It is far more consistent than it ever was during the "News at When" era and ultimately it's what's in the bulletin that matters, not what time it airs. I think unlike the early 2000s the content is now of a standard that a move to 10.30pm is less of an issue, although ratings will obviously be hit.
To be fair to ITV last week they moved the soaps rather than the news for most of the eviction episodes of I'm a Celebrity and next week with the exception of Friday for Text Santa it's back to 10pm. Then in the New Year as Andrew says it's back to 10pm all week and from the look of the programmes before it will remain that way for the foreseeable future. I suspect too ITV will commit to it remaining at 10pm in the run-up to the election.
