The Big Ben clockface is a unique branding device - it was to ITV/ITN what the globe is to the BBC. All you need is an ITV newscaster with the clockface behind them, and it's instantly recognisable as being "ITV News". I don't buy the London-centric guff. It suited ITV News fine for forty years. And if a skyline view of London had to be removed from the iconic News at Ten, why did Peter Fincham see fit to give it to Daybreak?
I doubt we will see major changes for news - the current garish designs have been in use for only three years, and ITV have a have a keen habit of chucking something good after only a short period of time before replacing it with unwanted crap that lasts for years. However, I really would like to see an overhauled branding built entirely around the Big Ben clockface. As for colours - I have always associated blue with news. Even teal wasn't bad. But the current yellow/gray/white mess is really drab and stale on screen. I guess we'll only see a return to blue for ITV News if ITV1 itself drops yellow and picks that colour.
Having said all that... something desperately needed is an EDITORIAL rebrand. I absolutely hate the tendency to go overboard with the emotive adjectives in the script. At times it can be shockingly bad, almost as if Julie Etchingham is about to burst into tears. I'd appreciate a huge toning down of that please, because it just feels awkward.
I guess this is one of the reasons why people keep harking back to News at Ten 2008 - because ITV actually had most of the elements spot on during that era.

Surely I'm not the ONLY person who really likes ITV News' presentation as it is at the moment? I mean.. it's good... like, it all matches, and looks neat. I just don't get the criticism.

I agree in some respect, but the yellow and studio design is just yuck.

The 2004-09 theme tune was poor - the current one has gravitas, although it could do with a bit of sharpening.
I'd like to see them return to Big Ben branding (even if just the clockface) too, and they need to remix the theme tune. The current one sonds a bit too clunky and disjointed. I'm probably in the minority but I preferred the 2004-2009 theme over what came before, it just sounded more modern, which when rivalling BBC and Sky is important.

2004-6 and 2006-9, there was no continual theme all the way through, though the 06-09 was okay, 04 was very gimicky and lacked strength

Well like I said in my post, it's not the fact that I dislike the current presention it's just that the previous one was one of the best on TV! In my opinion of course! I mean I actually don't mind the current look, but I think without a relaunch this year it could get a bit tired!

No your not - I agree with BBCNicky it is the editorial direction which needs looking at more than the presentation. If ITV1 doesn't drop the logo and yellow a bit of evolution rather than resolution would be nice, while I think the regional branding could do with an update and new sets.
If the ITV rebrand is significant though I would like to see ITV News rebrand too rather than just have the new logo slapped over everything and the odd change in colour - though it would be interesting to see how the set looks in say blue and white rather than yellow and black.

Ah, yes - I'd forgotten about the change. Watching them back on YouTube, I dislike both of them.

I think some aspects of the current branding work better than others, but I also think it might be too soon for a major rebranding exercise. Minor tweaks and adjustments are one thing, but anything more significant or substantial could undermine the work that has already taken place to estalish ‘ITV News’ as a brand (especially when up against such a strong BBC brand).
I’d rather see the current branding run for some years still, before any major changes are introduced. However, as I think has already been mentioned previously, ITV News is likely to fall into line with any branding changes implemented by the network itself.

Yellow and black DOES work, just not the way they're doing it (see BBC Sport). The studio is awful too but I think if they built it to be physical with screens and lightboxes it would look quite good. I don't mind the look so much, but I can't believe for a second that it cost them £1m.
