I've never entirely bought into this idea that whoever reads the sports belt has to be a sports specialist. It's ITV News, not Wisden. You don't need a particularly deep knowledge of sport to do it. It's all very populist, wide-appeal stuff - not obscure sports trivia.

True - but when you've got someone in to present a sports segment they should at least appear to know more than the main programme host.

From a presentation point of view though it generally does look better if you've got a sports segment to have a seperate presenter for it.

Re: The David Mannion interview - I notice he mentions a possible comeback for Trevor McDonald

Quote:
The departure of Mannion's mate, Sir Trevor McDonald, who presented the news for the final time at the end of last year, has not affected ratings. Mark Austin has proved a capable replacement, and McDonald will still appear from time to time. 'Before I knackered my ankle, we played tennis. He's a national treasure and an icon and all of that and we're talking about doing something on the Trinidad and Tobago's World Cup game with England.'

Mr Mannion is lost at the moment with many of his friends leaving ITN, with Craig oliver gone, the network output is beginning to show cracks in the team, staff morality must be really low at the service and for trevor coming back i think he means in other programmes

There aren't that many people who know more about sport than Mark Austin.

Using a seperate presenter for sport is more to give an image that the person presenting knows what they are talking about. To be honest, all they have to do is read what's on the autocue, but your average viewer doesn't know that.

I totally agree with having a seperate sports presenter. But there won't be that many who know more than the main presenter, seeing as the main presenter is now Mark Austin.

your "average viewer" doesn't know that the presenter reads an autocue?

*that* being *all they do* - I wasn't implying that the average viewer doesn't know that they read an autocue.

For the Lunchtime News...

How about having some seating area introduced around the newsdesk, so they could have a live in studio audience. It would be great for "today's pulse". They could even show them arriving in the studio for the mid-morning summary, and have no headlines at all!

Katie could bring her baby in, so could Andrea on a Friday, Have on a Monday and Friday "The Baby Pulse"

I wonder if Joshua could make a star appearance?

A somewhat appropriate idea for the current Lunchtime News.
