Very interesting article from today's Observer - An interview with David Manion

Have to love the quote about 24 hr news channels having a limited shelf life - he may, or may not have a point there, but he wouldn't be saying that if the News Channel was still on the go, would he?

I think they should give Nina the weekend role on a permanent basis.

It was much better in the past when the Weekend News had a regular presenter, with Katie Derham and Mary Nightingale both having stints as a regular weekend newsreader.

Nina could continue covering the Lunchtime and Evening News on Fridays, plus a couple of others days a week, along with her weekend duties.

Also, come on ITV and get a proper sports reporter in. If the 10.30 sport bulletin is so important, why let anyone read it. Mark Austin has more experience in the field than most the people reading it lately.

Also, bring back the weekend sports reporter - it just looks so much better having someone different doing it!

Andrea is the permanet weekend presenter. She is due back from Maternity leave soon. It will be intresting to see what happens to Nina when she returns. I expect Andrea to be given the Friday Lunchtime and Evening News, like what she was doing for a while in the summer.

Maybe Nina will be given the sport permanently in the late bulletin now that Felicity has gone. Afterall they seem to use Nina to stand in for whichever female presenter is off.

I found his ramblings very realistic and honest. The only thing you could mention from that article that could be deemed as sour-grapes was the statement you mention but otherwise it seems that ITV News is now being steered in the correct direction with added resources and things seemed to have settled down post NC closure.

Mark should not be given the privalege of presenting two bulletins a day, it is not fair on other people. Plus sack Mary and Andrea, put Nina in Mary's position and Steve Scott for weekend. Jonathan "Willsy" is very very dire, just like Flic Barr.

God you make it sound like they all must hate Mark. I'm sure they're all contracted to work a set amount of hours and will have all agreed to them.

And to suggest sacking people - that's not very nice, is it?

Ok, Flic wasn't 'dire' IMO and hoping to sack someone is pretty nasty (even though I once suggested Andrea should be ditched).

The idea of the 'Nightly News' appears to have been dropped by ITN completely.

That call isn't for ITN, it's for the network.

Why do you keep referring to her as 'Flic'

That sort of thing verges on stalkerish behaviour

Andrew's never referred to Gaynor Barnes as "Gay".

You seem to dodge between "Flic" and using her last name, or another presenter's last name on another occasion. Just call her Felicity or Felicity Barr, like the rest of us who don't know her do, and stop giving yourself an impression of grandeur.

Unfortunate cock-up with the start of the Morning News today when the titles failed to run for the first 2 seconds and we were treated to the following side shot of the waiting presenter blinking before launching into the headlines Shocked Shocked .

There will soon be no-one left at Gray's Inn Road ... now Craig Oliver (head of network programmes, responsible for the general election programme etc) is moving to the BBC as editor of the Ten

I've never entirely bought into this idea that whoever reads the sports belt has to be a sports specialist. It's ITV News, not Wisden. You don't need a particularly deep knowledge of sport to do it. It's all very populist, wide-appeal stuff - not obscure sports trivia.

True - but when you've got someone in to present a sports segment they should at least appear to know more than the main programme host.

From a presentation point of view though it generally does look better if you've got a sports segment to have a seperate presenter for it.

Re: The David Mannion interview - I notice he mentions a possible comeback for Trevor McDonald

Quote:
The departure of Mannion's mate, Sir Trevor McDonald, who presented the news for the final time at the end of last year, has not affected ratings. Mark Austin has proved a capable replacement, and McDonald will still appear from time to time. 'Before I knackered my ankle, we played tennis. He's a national treasure and an icon and all of that and we're talking about doing something on the Trinidad and Tobago's World Cup game with England.'
