Agreed with this. I thought it was just beginning to establish itself as the more sombre, reflective one of the three bulletins but it now comes across - possibly intentionally - as an off-shoot of the Evening News.

I couldn't agree more, the old News At 10:30 was a very high quality bulletin until the revamp, now it has just gone downhill, it is like the 2001-04 era of News At Ten when it just repeated the Evening News. It also has more pointless people stories, such as following ordinary Iraqis, which was on the other night.
The only things I like about the new News At 10:30 is that Austin is the regular host and does a good job, the titles and music seem to suit the 10:30 more than any other ITV News bulletin.
Since the News Channel closed, ITV News just doesn't do it for me anymore, I only like the presentation which is top notch, otherwise I'm a Sky News person now I'm afraid to say, as I like to keep up to date with the News, not wait until 10.30pm.

Completely agree with James, Luke and nwtv2003 here - whilst the look has vastly improved, I feel that the content needs a lot of work; for example, I do not feel that the evening bulletin shoud have lead on "Who Cares" series tonight, when the Neil Entwhistle case was the real headliner.

Another good point, and I have undergone a similar transition in the past month or so - nowadays, I tend to watch a lot more of Sky's content, as this is the channel that generally provides what is actually making the news .

For me, the Lunchtime News is by far the worst of the ITV bulletins.
Notorious for leading with these kind of campaigning lifestyle crusades, relegating the actual newsworthy stuff down the pecking order. The running order is highly questionable.
Add to that the fact that they squeeze in the 3 add breaks for the hour in the first 30 minutes which ruins the whole flow of the bulletin. I expect most of the audience has given up for the 1 O'Clock by the time of the third ad break.
Then we have 'The Pulse'. Too many guests and callers crammed into too short a time slot, so what you end up with is short soundbites without any room for proper discussion or debate. It's worthless. You just aren't given the time to construct a reasonable argument.
Save the phone-ins, the human interest, the campaigns to This Morning, reduce the duration of the bulletin, give the news to us straight, and put a quiz show on in the other half hour.

I may have began this debate by saying ITV News has improved - but actually I find myself agreeing with alot of your comments.
On the issue though of news breaking during bulletins, I do think there has been a marked improvement - they seem to have reporters ready with the latest, while in the past they'd have just possibly broken the story and told viewers the ITV News Channel would keep them up to date.
Agree with the Lunchtime News being the worst - never liked it since it became an hour-long show.
The first half hour isn't too bad - just switch off before The Pulse. I don't like though how on the Lunchtime News they seem to finish each others sentences.
The thing that really annoys me about The Pulse is that the morning news summaries often feature just two headlines before the majority of the bulletin is given over to promoting The Pulse - along with loads of examples of questions you could ring in and ask.

I'm of mixed opinion as far as ITV News is concerned. I must admit that I've been watching a lot of ITV News recently, more so than the BBC (which is becoming very stale).
Presentationally, ITV News is excellent. Their titles/stings and music are excellent, and their graphics are pleasant on the eye. They make excellent use of virtual reality and the graphics do help the viewer to digest the key facts of a story.
However, their major problem is content:
ITV News Summary - far too much time given over to promoting The Pulse. They give us one or two news stories at most and the rest of the time is given over to telling us how to get in contact with our views. I think it should be renamed "ITV News Promotion" - "summary" is no longer an accurate title.
ITV Lunchtime News - by far my biggest gripe. I hate this bulletin and very rarely tune in. Where do I start? Too many breaks, not enough news, too many lifestyle stories and too campaigning in nature. The Pulse is an absolute joke - it needs to be done away with NOW. Frankly, I'm not interested in what Joe Bloggs thinks about random issues. I want to know what the news is and that's it. As a poster said earlier, it needs to return to 30 minutes and the rest of the time given over to another programme. I also think the programme should go back to one presenter - Nicholas Owen. He's about the best thing about the Lunchtime News.
ITV Evening News - Not much to say here. My only complaint is the campaigning nature of the bulletin (which is in line with the general direction of ITV News). They need to focus on reporting what has happened, not what they want to happen.
ITV News at 10.30 - it used to be the best ITV News bulletin, in the days of Trevor McDonald and John Suchet. I'm warming to Mark Austin, but he doesn't have the authority of Trevor or John. Again, they are focussing too much on campaigning instead of reporting the news.

Absolutely agree!! Why don't you email Deborah Turness Editor of ITV News and tell her what you think? The whole thing is working on fear now. What if ITV don't renew the contract??? What should we do?? I know let's make a stupid consumer programme and let's do it for an hour!
I'm afraid any crediblity Ms. Turness had died with her time at 5. She seriously suggested that a correspondent(during the last war) should take his gas mask off AGAIN on camera when threat had gone away. Said correspondent refused! Quite right too!!!!

Cut the Lunchtime to 30 minutes of national news and then at one have a 10 minute regional programme, follow by a recap & then the national weather bringing it up to 1:15. Then programming as usual.
I'm not to keen on BBC News, in the way that its presented, although they usually have good quality reporting. ITV News have excellent presenation and where it matters the reporting is great, but in other times (when its not breaking) it slips. The Pulse has got to go, I think the 12:00 Summary should go to and be replaced with one at 3:15ish.
