Who's been doing the ITV Weekend News recently? I've missed it for the last few weeks. When Andrea Catherwood returns, will she reclaim the weekend bulletins? If she does, there certainly will be a surplus of presenters at ITN. I suppose some of them may have to return to reporting.

Nina said tonight that they wil be reporting on Ellen MacArthur's next sailing trip exclusively on ITV News at 10:30. So it looks as if the the Nightly News is not going to be used, at least not for a good while yet.

The past few weeks it has been James Mates, Nina Hossein & Steve Scott. Steve is on duty this weekend.

They appear to be operating on a rota with them each doing one out of three weekends. Although now Nina appears to be doing the sport, it could be divided between just Steve and James. I doubt Nina will last on the sport for long, for example every Friday she does the Lunchtime News and the Evening News, surely they can't expect her to do the News at 10.30 as well on a Friday.

I have to say i am a little suprised that one of the News channel's faces were not kept on to read the sports news, for example Carrie Frais would be a good example, and it would be a good step up for her, she has experience at presenting the sport.

I would suspect Nina is only standing in until the new regular sports presenter starts, maybe Monday.

What i don't understand is itv's obsession in letting any correspondant present the sports news. Surely if they insist on having a sports bulletin, they should at least get someone who knows what they are talking about. Since the sports segment launched two years ago Lauren Taylor, who at the time was economic correspondant, Chris Rogers, John Nicolson, Owen Thomas and now Nina Hossain have all be spotted presenting the sports roundup. You do not get that on the BBC, as each of there presenters have some background in sport.

I read on DS today (sorry, yes I know) that ITV are going to be shunting the late news to 11pm to make way for... wait for it...

CELEBRITY LOVE ISLAND. Evil or Very Mad

I hope this isn't true - aren't ITV forced to have the news at 10.30PM?

That won't happen at all.

Re: Sport - considering London don't have a daily regional sports presenter (most other regions do) I think they could get someone in to do the London Sport at 6pm and then the ITV bulletin at 10.30pm.

It's a more general issue than just ITV News, but a couple of instances in the last week have shown ITV News act more as a campaigner, rather than a neutral observer - however right the cause may be.

Firstly, last week they were on about hit and run, with headlines such as "ITV News campaigns for a change in the law", while this week ITV News has been "campaigning for a carers champion".

Both these are just causes - but I expect the news to be reporting the campaign for change, not campaigning themselves - though of course they can, and always have done, air special reports highlighting the issue and question the people responsible for them.

Having said that I'm beginning to notice an improvement in ITV News since the News Channel closes, especially with how they handled a few stories this week which broke while bulletins were on air (e.g. verdicts in the Hamza, Jenkins trial, the extradition story last night)

how have you measured this improvement?

IMO ITV News has gone downhill since the New Year.

I really dislike the sensationalist, crusading tone that much of the output now has.
Yes, it's always been a bit brash (since 1955, even) but there's been a pronounced change for the worse.

Last year it was mostly confined to the Lunchtime News, but now the rest of the bulletins have been infected by the same style.

Nothing at all against Mark Austin, but the 10.30 has lost its distinctive tone since Trevor retired.

I hate the zoom thing they do with the top headline to ratchet up the drama.

I'm in agreement with the Londoner. Although sometimes a bit staid, the NC at least considered itself news, in the true public service meaning of the word.

ITV News is now structured entirely around the tabloid agenda always examplified by the Lunchtime, Early and Evening News. Although I would often switch on the NC during the day (their 7/7 coverage was by far the best) I can never bring myself to look at the ITV1 bulletins unless I have to. BONG We're all going to die etc etc.
