I don't want to raise any of your ires, but at the risk of my head being bitten off, I will go ahead:

Hang on! Before you all post back to me saying "ITN will never come back on-screen" - I am no good with technological terms..... I mean the over-shoulder inset picture. I would like to see that reintroduced for News At Ten.And again, this is a forum, everyone. Not "Pick On Anyone Who is Not Up-To-Date With TV No More Day".

I personally hate the over shoulder inset, and always have. I hope you liked my use of an Oxford comma.

What you're talking about are window graphics, and I would quite like to see windows return to TV news. You see similar things these days on videowalls on BBC, ITV, C4 and Sky.

US TV news still use the window graphic. Quite often it's the local TV news, such as CBS 2 in New York.

I like the simplicity of the window graphic. It's a visual accompanyment to the story. I didn't like the BBC style of about 5 years ago of having a two or three word description rather than a visual.

When News at Ten returned earlier this year they indeed did utilise an over-the-shoulder (or inset) graphic - basically a narrow 'glass screen' with a picture of the story overlaid onto it. That seems to have been dropped though, now - I do wonder why. I wouldn't actually mind seeing a return to it.

On a loosely related note, I'm getting tired of the current ITV News look. It seems so boring and somewhat tired compared to News at Ten. The NaT studio, astons etc, all look so much fresher for a 'traditional' news bulletin. I won't bother expressing how inconsistent the whole ITV News look is, what with the teal-washed opening titles/sting sequences compared with the blue astons and studio.

My picture at the top of this page obviously shows Graham Miller. My question is: Whatever happened to him? I liked him presenting/reporting for ITV and newscasting on the ITN News Channel.
Also, did this actually happen? Whilst Graham was reporting from Wimbledon for ITN in the late 90s/early 00s, did he get kidnapped? He might not have but I am sure I read it in the newspaper. It is probably me just thinking about that possibility and remembering this after all this time. Anyone help?

My thoughts on those window graphics [as one of you said it was - cannot remember, sorry] is that it looks cleaner than what they have got now - three or four overlapping pictures.
I did notice News At Ten adopting the glass look for its window graphics. I liked that very much.
News At Ten or its 'regular' weekday double-headed bulletins would look better in presentation if the newscasters did not share the same story. It looks and sounds much better if one story was done by one newscaster, with the camera on the person. It would also look better if the only times you would see both newscasters in shot is the opening, going-to-adverts, news in brief and closing. Or am I on my own on this one?

He worked at Sky Sports for a bit, I don't know if he's still there.

As for the over the shoulder thing, they have done it on News at Ten before...

@McMahon - In the future, it would be appreciated if you could credit my site if you wish to use my images on another site... thank you.

I guess it was dropped because it didn't look too great then. It's strange really that most news broadcasters have dropped the visual "over the shoulder" window when you think that generally in broadcasting almost everything else now has to have something visual to accompany what is being said (I'm thinking ECPs etc.)

I agree the main ITV News is long overdue a revamp. All they need to do really is use the graphical elements of News at Ten as the starting point and I'm sure they could come up with something better than we have now. The virtual studio means it can get a whole new look through a bit of CSO trickery - I think the only physical thing they need to change is the desk.

Nope, it appears it's just a normal ITV News tonight.

Was nice though to hear the new male c/a introduce it as "the main news from ITN". Appropriate, given the recent discussion in this thread...
