I think for me now the ITV News set needs a new look.

Since 2004, we have had the basic set design of the curved newswall and desk in the middle and even though they changed the backdrop from the terrible cold blue to a newsroom/atrium backdrop in 2006, I think ITV News needs a brand new look for 2009.

News at Ten looks excellent and has a nice warm nightime feel to it, very similar to the News at Ten 1988-1992.

But the other bulletins need a new look. I know they probably spend over a million on the so called "theatre of news" but now since ITV News has adopted a more sit-down approach to presenting bulletins, why then have a newswall and platform. They only stand up for the first couple of minutes of the bulletins.

I would like to see a new look as it will be five years with the same set in February 2009.

They won't replace the VR set as it is, but what they probably will do at some stage, and should do soon, is to create some virtual sets for the various programmes. I would suggest that the Lunchtime News has one virtual set, the Evening News a different one, because the programmes have different agendas and different audiences. You could keep a modified version of the Theatre of News for the Weekend bulletins and the weekday summaries, and give the Overnight summaries and Morning News a consistent look too. It's easy to do with a Virtual Studio system.

They should probably change the desk too.

I like the idea, though I suppose they need to keep the ITV NEWS branding in there, maybe a set that changes colours depending on the programme.
I know most people prefer the more seated news, but I think the standing up and theatre wall presentation worked well for the evening news, especially with one at the desk throwing over to another at the wall, where as a seated bulletin does suit the News At Ten and the Lunchtime News more so in my opinion.

Completely agree - when it's done well there is no issue with them standing up, and the Evening News always did it well.

As for different looks for each bulletin - not necessary IMO, just keep News at Ten and the rest of ITV News separate. Varying the colour slightly could work though - if they choose the right colours of course!

In the good old days in the early 80's there was News At One, News at 545 and News At Ten, they all had their own identity, own sets, own music, why not go back to those days and get rid if the generic look?

They could do that for the regional news too.

I don't think we'll ever see a return to those days, at least not for a long time. Practically every broadcaster has moved from separate identities for individual programmes to a single unified look, the BBC taking it to the absolute extreme with their latest re-brand. Even CNN has followed the same trend for its international channel. In an age of such vast choice where so many channels are available to increasing numbers of people, each broadcaster needs to hammer home that a viewer is watching their output. Having different looks for each bulletin may please us presentation fans but it doesn't make commercial sense anymore.

I just hope they keep News At Ten and only put it on Fridays too.

It would be a loss and stupid if it were to go again.

My guess would be they've knocked a minute off one of the other bulletins, so are making it up by starting at 17:59 instead of 18:00.

Well, I noticed recently that WCBS TV in New York seemed to be starting their bulletins before the top of the hour, and without ads between programmes. I suppose it's a way of trying to hold viewers for the local news by having it start straight after Golden Balls, trying to stop people switching over for the BBC News at Six.

All to do with minutage.... They have to do a certain amount before the end of the year, so extra time added to many bulletins. Watch the weekend programmes getting longer too.

Calendar's Rachel Philips reporting live from Oldham tonight. Unusual as that is slightly outside the YTV patch unless she is now doubling up as one of ITV News' North of England reporters

Was it just my eyes, or have they added splashes of yellow to the titles and stings? Did anyone else notice this on the Lunchtime News?
