I was reading this and it made me think of a certain somebody who was billed to be a correspondent in Washington for the ITV election programme but was never on air - don't you think?

Quote:
Wicked whisper: which TV news hack was so keen to be part of the coverage of the US elections that they personally forked out for the airfare? Given the amount of airtime they got, we're sure it was worth every cent.

Seems the sort of shot which looks fine for a preview, but not for a bulletin - though I do agree a newsroom backdrop for the non-News at Ten bulletins would probably be better than a skyline.

The problem with doing a News At Ten style skyline for the daytime bulletins is the fact that where as by Ten it's dark, nothing can change that, where as in the day the light varies due to the weather, the daylight times change through the year, and not a true reflection, a bit like the recorded ITV Local newsrooms.

Not necessarily, around May/June/July it doesn't get properly dark until at least 10.30pm so even News at Ten would sometimes start whilst it was still relatively light which would just ruin the purpose of the set (if it was a live backdrop).

I think for me now the ITV News set needs a new look.

Since 2004, we have had the basic set design of the curved newswall and desk in the middle and even though they changed the backdrop from the terrible cold blue to a newsroom/atrium backdrop in 2006, I think ITV News needs a brand new look for 2009.

News at Ten looks excellent and has a nice warm nightime feel to it, very similar to the News at Ten 1988-1992.

But the other bulletins need a new look. I know they probably spend over a million on the so called "theatre of news" but now since ITV News has adopted a more sit-down approach to presenting bulletins, why then have a newswall and platform. They only stand up for the first couple of minutes of the bulletins.

I would like to see a new look as it will be five years with the same set in February 2009.

I really can't see ITV getting rid of that VR set any time soon. Apart from the cost of it, the VR studio allows ITV a great deal of flexibility. They can make that studio into whatever they want, evident on election night. That one studio has hosted the Lunchtime News, Evening News, national/London summaries, News at Ten and the election special in 2008 and each programme looked unique. I think the most we'll see for the time being is a change in what's put on the newswall but that VR stuff is here to stay, in my opinion.

Whilst on the subject of a new look, it could be coming sooner than we think. Of course I have nothing on any authority but someone on Digital Spy claims that ITV are moving the news to 7pm at some point next year, post 10 of the following link.

I meant to post this a while ago. I'm not too sure on the validity but you never know, we did all doubt someone on here for saying News at Ten was back and someone else for posting the caps of titles before it went on air. So pinch of salt required, but that member seems quite reliable/not the type to lie so you never know.

I agree, the 'theatre of news' will undoubtedly remain for the foreseeable future. As you say, it can be transformed into largely anything they want, so I see no reason why they'd get rid of it. I'd welcome a refresh for 2009 though but keep a newsroom setting for all bulletins (bar NaT).

There were rumours even as early as 2001 that the Evening News would be moving to 7pm. But then again, who knows? It would be stupid for them to move it from 6:30pm though; I doubt it would get bigger ratings than it already is getting at the moment. It's currently the highest-rated bulletin on ITV1 so why bother moving it?

This is just something that bugs me about the way they use the graphics wall, its probably just me Laughing Embarassed . When they come back from the ad breaks, they always position the presenter on the part of the walkway to the viewers right and its quite obvious in the wide shots of the studio. But when whoever starts the next item, the graphic they add in the background is as though they're stood in the centre where they start the bulletin, not using what should be behind them if that makes any sense? As I said its probably just me that it annoys ...

As you know, the walkway doesn't actually exist anymore. The whole floor of the studio is painted CSO green and behind the desk/platform, near to the newswall, is a box, also painted green. Whenever the presenters are stood up, they are stood on this box. It was put there shortly after the walkway was removed because initially the presenter's feet disappeared - the box raises them to the height of the fake walkway. So, during the postcom sequence, the standing presenter is stood in the same position as at the start of the bulletin. It's probably just the camera framing that makes it look a bit different.
