What time do the polls close in the US then - and is it the same time across the country.

I'm guessing by the coverage they're expecting the result by the morning then, so I assume like all things American's it's scheduled with US prime time in mind.

Indeed so, I remember in 2004 when CNBC showed NBC's coverage, they started at 7.00pm ET, which was 12.00am UK, but assuming the Polls close at 10.00pm, you would get the first result in at about 3 or 4am.

The Lunchtime News's advantage was that it got in before the BBC, so moving it an hour later never made sense. I certainly don't believe Loose Women would lose any viewers by having to wait an extra half-hour, especially as if their viewers hate the news so much, surely they'll tune back to ITV when the One o'clock News begins.

Yes it never made sense why they moved the lunchtime news to 1.30pm, especially at the 12.30pm show (usually LW) could easily be shown at 1pm. Im sure 1pm was the traditional time for LW when it first started anyway.

I suppose they are trying to avoid people switching over after This Morning tho as generally the morning schedule is far stronger than the afternoons I think.

Geraint Vincent obviously researches the stories he reports on well. At Lunch he was outside TV Centre and said that Jonathan Ross had signed a new contract recently - which was actually over two years ago. Also he said that Ross and Russell Brand has been sacked and handed back to the studio and Alistair Stewart quickly said something like "Geraint Vincent there, reporting on JR and RB's suspension .

John Suchet spoke on ITV's Alan Titchmarsh Show yesterday that he has no intention of returning to front the news.."When I got the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Royal Television Society, I thought it was a subtle hint that it was time for me to fully retire [until Going For Gold came up]".
That really is a shame. John Suchet was one of ITN's best newscasters and I was quite disappointed about his retirement in 2004 and ITV News has not quite got anyone with John's calibre as it were. The only other "old newscaster" on ITV now is Alastair Stewart. Where are they all going!

As revealed in the NaT thread Mark will be presenting both the 6:30 and 10pm bulletins - Alastair or even James IMO should have been promoted to the Evening News, or better still have Mary present the EN alone.

On a separate note, the ITV/ITN US election graphics look really lovely so far. Do we think they'll re-use the 2005 UK election theme for the results programme, or will there be a different one entirely? Nice to see that Alastair will be presenting the programme on the night from London, with Mark in Washington and Julie in New York.

I can't help wondering whether ITV News have got their news priorities correct. The BBC's top headline was about the crisis in Congo, ITV on the other hand lead with Jonathan Ross & the BBC. They were even reporting from outside Ross' house this evening. Whilst I know the BBC wish to draw a line on things surely the crisis in Congo is more important.

I can't remember the exact wording bit what they were saying was pretty much "Jonathon Ross is having a Halloween party - how dare he??!!".

I've defended ITV News quite a lot in the past but its been absolutely ridiculous this week. There has been no need at all to lead on the BBC story. Any lunchtime/evening bulletins I have seen have lead with it. I only seen both bulletins on one day, both led with the story. What have News at Ten been leading with? (I never watch that)

Every news bulletin on every channel has been leading with the Ross/Brand story, Newsnight, Sky News, Channel 4 News, although the BBC did start to cover it late and finish first for obvious reasons

News at Ten also led with the item all this week. It is ridiculous; it's getting beyond a joke now and I'm sick to the back teeth of hearing about this blasted story; surely the Congo crisis or the run-up to voting day in the US are more important topics. The Brand-Ross debacle should have been put to something like third running on the agenda IMO.

Hmm - and tonight he read a script describing David Miliband as Foreign Minister - isn't he the Foreign SECRETARY rather than just a minister? (There is more than one minister in the FCO isn't there?)

I realise Geraint probably didn't write the original script - but most presenters worth their salt would have corrected when approving their scripts or even as it came up on Autocue.
