I notice that ITV News don't bother with the tabloid style straps any more with the swooshing noise during the headline sequence. Or has it been this way for some time ?

Big improvement anyway.

They haven't been there since Monday; they were present last week for sure. It is a big improvement, I hated the stereotypical 'catch phrases' and sensational language they used on those hideous straps.

Bad thing is that they've still got that other stupid swooshing effect when going from one clip to another (for a single story) in the headline sequence... jeez.

I would imagine the "President Elect" will still be named until his inauguration and then George W Bush becomes "Former US President".

I bet their quite a few captions they'd like to use in association with good old George W.

Even though the election is in November, the presidency of the serving president, according to the Constitution, does not end until 1200 on the day of the inauguration of the president elect in January. That's what's so remarkable about the British system - it takes America a couple of months to change over presidents but in the UK it happens literally overnight.

AIUI the delay in swearing in the new US President is more tradition than a practical requirement. During the 19th century if could take weeks to gather the election results, for the Electoral College to meet and then for the new President to gather his administration in Washington DC.

It's surprising that they haven't changed it to allow a faster handover as they are left with a fairly pointless presidency for 2 months when the incumbent is leaving office.

In the UK we don't directly elect the Prime Minister and there have been times when there has been nobody in office (usually if they die in post). However, even after an election defeat somebody is still PM until they hand in their resignation to the Queen, swiftly followed 30 minutes later by the next person being asked to form a government. I do remember Tony Blair being referred to as "Prime Minister Elect" in 1997 after John Major had conceeded defeat (in the early hours of the morning) and before he was oficially appointed (a period of about 12 hours).

Nice to see Sally Biddulph doing a live on the lunchtime summary today with Steve; she has a nice reporting style and I like her so far. Am I right in thinking we'll see Lucy Manning then sometime next week?

BTW nice to here Steve refer to the next bulletin as the "ITV Evening News at 5.40pm". Thought he'd turned into John Suchet then!

I see next week they're back to the annoying practice of putting the "evening" news in the middle of a film again.

According to DigiGuide, there will be an "ITN" US Election Special between midnight and 4am on Election Night.
Will it actually be branded ITN, or is it a mistake?

Granted they've not done this for a while but I really don't get why ITV insist on doing this. What's so bad about having the weekend early evening bulletin at 6pm?

Would be really interesting (and somewhat odd) if indeed it is ITN-branded, but I really do think it's a plain old mistake. Don't think there's any chance of ITN branding on ITV1 nowadays (barring the endcaps on ITV News of course).

That'll be interesting. The BBC and ITV both working from the same building. (AIUI whilst the BBC US Election show is coming from Washington, the virtual graphics are likely to be coming from ITN at Gray's Inn Road - as they have for the last couple of BBC Local Election shows...)

Considering the timing I'm quite surprised ITV are bothering with anything at all.

As has already being said/written chapter and verse, the ITN name is a whole lot better than the clumsy-sounding ITV News.
If ITN ever do lose the ITV news contract, then ITV News will sound right. But seeing that ITN currently does the ITV news, it should be called "ITN News"! But will Michael Grade see sense?

By the way, I notice ITN do not have a Diplomatic Editor anymore. I think the last one was Robert Moore. Or a Defence Correspondent - the last one, to my recollection, was Kevin "whatever happened to him" Dunn. I know these are very minor points, but surely, a Diplomatic/Defence Correspondent could work from ITN HQ and done "on the cheap" like ITV want their news to be done.
If you're talking good reporters no longer at ITN: Adrian Britton, Mark Webster, Jackie Ashley, Stephen Cape, Geoffrey Archer, Norman Rees, Giles Smith, Desmond Hamill, Peter Sharp -- have they escaped into oblivion?!

That doesn't really make sense at all. You don't have ITN News and Sky News for 4 and Five.

Was not the role of diplomatic editor included in the role of International Editor which is currently Bill Neely. Also I read somehere that with the recent Political Team changes, Chris Ship was promoted in order that Tom Bradby could concentrate a bit more on Defence issues.
