I know the Lunchtime News is generally considered secondary to the Evening News because of the smaller potential audience but I think the programme is usually very good, and today's was excellent. The pace of the programme was spot-on, with interesting reports and 'two-ways' despite it being a relatively standard news day.

(I just thought it was sufficiently impressive to be worth mentioning Embarassed ).

Though it would be better with one newscaster. I'd put Katie as solo on the Lunchtime News, with Alastair on London Tonight with Salma/Romilly.

I take it Sally will be the main newscaster on the Weekend News with someone like Nina on relief?

I think Sally Biddulph is joining the roster of weekend political correspondents rather than as a newscaster.

Just caught Alastair Stewart popping outside for a fag during a report on BBC News at Six about the ITV local news changes.

Did I see a Windows cursor pop into view during a report on News at Ten tonight?

Mary off again yesterday, it was Katie who seems much better suited on the EN than the LN, though no chemistry between her and Mark.

They usually have a little laugh at the end but I think the tone of yesterday's bulletin reflected that all the stories were downbeat; problems with B&B, financial meltdown, etc.
(That said, Mark doesn't come across as being particularly approachable, but perhaps that's just his on-screen persona).

He will be in New York for today's EN.

I like the Lunchtime News when I can watch it and I think an on screen chemistry between Alistair & Katie is what makes it good. Its a light bulletin aimed at a daytime audience, it doesn't pretend to be Newsnight and for that reason I think it is a good bulletin. I do agree though Katie is good on the Evening News and with Nina off we'll probably be seeing more of her. I think they should definitely consider using her more, but I understand she also does London Tonight which would obviously get in the way.

I'm not particularly a fan of Mary, she is a good newsreader but she seems a little cold? But I think she is exactly what the evening bulletin needs. I always notice that the evening bulletin is better when presented solo by Mary, they ought to consider having Mary solo every night shes available, or any other presenter (preferably female, I think that is better for ITV) who is available to cover.

It seemed rather pointless having Mark in New York tonight - and looks even more pointless having Julie in Birmingham.

They want to cut regional news because of money. Even though they waste money as Brekkie Said sending Mark to New York.

It is ITN 'wasting money' by sending Mark out there, whereas the regional cuts are being made by ITV itself. Though I do agree it's pointless having three different presenters host a single news bulletin. Looked somewhat laughable on News at Ten earlier on when it went straight from Trevor to Mark and then to Julie in the headline sequence. It's all for effect (blah, blah...) but truly, what can Mark do that both John Irvine and Martin Geissler can't?

In my opinion, Julie was in Birmingham as ITV News At Ten would have held a reception at the Conservative party conference.

I was at the event last Tuesday at the Labour party conference and Julie, Mark and Alistair were there along with others.

That in my opinion is why Julie would have been in Birmingham last night, although they could have found a better reason for her to be there.

Is it just me or does Geraint always look completely out of his depth when presenting the evening bulletin? Even at the start of the show where the camera moves down he looks completely uncomfortable and doesn't know where to look. He is a good reporter though and is OK on the lunchtime bulletin, just not the evening one ...
