Ben Scotchbrook presented the lunchtime bulletin today and yesterday, are these his first national appearances?

I believe so.

Re: the title music. Could you elaborate a little bit on how it sounds different? I missed the titles so couldn't hear it (or see if the titles had indeed been made "bluer"). Only difference I noticed from the 5:45 bulletin was that the astons appeared to be static, less "shiny", and more blue.

To me it seems to have more bass and is a bit clearer. I would say its a tiny tweak, almost unnoticeable.

I have as well. I know we shouldn't be encouraging all the cost cutting mesures at ITV, but: wouldn't it make sense to have the ITV London newsreader do the summaries at the weekend, as well as the London Today bulletins, instead of having a national presenter in all that time?

To do that, it would mean that the National bulletin would have to come from the regional studio, or the regional bulletin would have to come from the national studio. And I don't think I ever recall a national bulletin on ITV1 coming from the regional studio.

Otherwise, one or the other of the bulletins would have to be pre-recorded, as it takes at least 5 minutes to get from the basement national studio, to the regional studio, which if memory serves is on the fourth floor of the ITN building.

No your memory doesn't serve you correctly. ITN don't even occupy that floor.

The national + ITV London news comes from the national studio every day at 1110.

And possible the weekday lunchtime bulletin as well? Whenever I've watched it on ITV Local there's only been one static shot.

Yep the lunchtime also comes from the national studio.

Re: the music - could it not just be the sound mixer on duty that day messing with the levels? I've not heard anything different the last few days.

The 1115 and 1355 London Today bulletins most certainly do come from the National studio. They switch a portion of the VR background to the London skyline while the titles are rolling. IIRC, the London studio is next to the ITV newsroom on the ground floor of ITN.

Well I definitely heard a little more bass (and perhaps more drum effects) in the music at the start of today's EN. To be honest I'm getting tired of the 'modernised' versions of the classic ITN music. The current package, done by Dave Hewson, doesn't really match up to the brilliant 1995 (and 1999) theme packages (which Hewson also composed); there aren't many different versions of the theme in the current package, the closing theme doesn't really sound inspired either to my mind, compare to the 1995 themes where you had several different arrangements and stings (all derived from the famous 'The Awakening' music), all of which sounded unique. The NAT music currently in use is fantastic, why they can't adapt arrangements of this - like they did back in 1995 - really is beyond me. Sure sure, Dave Lowe's BBC News music revolutionised news music, but the whole "modernised news" thing is fast becoming yawn-worthy for me!

Same here. I'm fed up of the David Lowe-style news music as well. It's gone on far too long in my opinion. That style hasn't aged well, whereas the old orchestral themes of the 1990s (both the BBC and ITN) still sound fresh and original. I'd definitely welcome a return to something a long those lines. Mind you, nothing will sound better until they go back to using proper instruments for the themes rather than synthesised ones. As nice as the current News at Ten theme is, it's not a patch on the 1990s version.
