It really is stand in season at ITV News at the moment. I presume that the most are on holiday, but surely they could place better things in place, so that if the same people do all week, or just to get someone in to replace certain people.
Strange that Mary and Katie did the Lunchtime News. Hasn't Katie been away from the lunchtime news with Nina doing all week so far?
Though it was nice to see Steve Scott on the Evening News tonight, I'm always impressed when I see him present.

No, Katie presented it on Monday (with Bill), Romilly on Tuesday and Nina on Wednesday.
Over the last few weeks I think Katie may have had to take some time off to fit in her commitments to the BBC's Maestro programme.
They try to stick with the regular presenters whenever possible and, appropriately enough, Katie led yesterday's bulletin. IMO, she and Mary worked well together, but then Katie always does an excellent job so as long as she is presenting I don't mind who presents with her.

Yeah I like him, he's on again tonight. I think he's the best cover for Mark.
I agree, I like Steve too. He's so much better than Geraint, who in my opinion is best suited to reporting. What does everyone think of Romilly Weeks? I like her presenting style, and I wouldn't mind seeing her more often on the news..
As for NaT, do we think we'll see anyone like Romilly or even Nina having a go at presenting it? God forbid that Geraint should ever be allowed to present it! (Joking, of course...)
I don't mind Romilly, she isn't the best presenter there but she isn't the worst one there. But it looks like shes Nina's maternity cover and it looks like Nina has now left, she usually does both lunchtime & evening bulletins on a Friday and she usually presents all weekend every fortnight. She hasn't done any of them. Or they could just be easing her out instead of working her as much as they usually do.
I think Nina would suit News at Ten very well. Her presenting style is very calm and she doesn't go OTT like some of the other ITV presenters. Her clarity is also outstanding and I think she would make a good host for News at Ten. However when Trevor eventually leaves it would be much better to see Julie present on her own.

I like Romilly. Dont think we will see her or Nina present News at Ten though - Mary and Katie seem to be the stand in presenters when Julie isnt there.
Time was when newscasters had authority and gravitas when they presented the news [i.e. Fiona Armstrong, John Suchet, Julia Somerville, Leonard Parkin...aah, Leonard Parkin - I remember him a few times reading the news then he retired], however, I just can't warm to the likes of Nina Hossain or Romilly Weeks. Both mediocre in my view. Steve Scott and Geraint Vincent are alright, but whatever happened to ITV News Channel's quite excellent Lloyd Bracey?!
In other news, it is Alastair Burnet's birthday today - 80. Does it seem to anyone who remembers Alastair that it is 17 years next month when he retired!
Also, it appears Lawrence McGinty must have left ITN, with no fanfare. There has been some big medical stories [such as the NHS' birthday] and it has just been Sue Saville. What a shame, Lawrence was a good reporter - the first ever reporter to report underwater!

I don't know if he has left or now but Sue Saville would be the one reporting on Medical stories as she is the medical correspondent. Lawrence is/was Science Editor, which would mean he does cover some medical stories.
Like I say I have no idea if he has left but it would be a shame if he had.

I don't think they're losing authority as such, I just think that as news presentation is moving forward channels are on the whole opting for younger newsreaders and a more relaxed presentation style.

I don't think age comes into it. To be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing a young presenter with the same, clear and concise presenting style as, for example, Julia Somerville or John Suchet - both of whom were excellent newscasters during their times at ITN.
I remember for ITV/ITN's 50th birthday back in September 2005 they brought back five former presenters to present together with either Mark or Mary for a week. Both Julia and Selena Scott seemed not one bit out of place in the theatre of news studio and I think both indeed cut the mustard presenting a modern news programme... though I have to say I wasn't keen on Gordon Honeycombe! Same for Martyn Lewis (who I always associate as a BBC face rather than ITN) who seems slightly too formal for my liking to be hosting a modern news bulletin.
Lawrence McGinty appears on CNN International from time to time, presenting science reports. He is tagged and closes his reports as a CNN reporter, and not from the ITN Affiliate. So, maybe he is on CNN's permanent staff now.
Leonard Parkin and Alistair Burnet - real blasts from the past.
