You're being led down the garden path folks. It's not news provision from ITN in the morning that's going to 5 days a week.........................indeed I'd take a guess that teams at ITN may well be working to cover periods they don't at the moment in the near future..................

Might they be looking a bit bleary eyed in a national sense?

Well the overnight summaries are still scheduled to continue at the weekend too, so they'll have to have someone in for them.

So in theory they might be having someone in on Saturday nights just to host a two-minute summary at 2am. I can't see the 11pm newsreader sticking around.

I know that most of a news show has to be done live but is there any obligation that news summaries throughout the night have to be done live? Couldn't they just pre record how ever many summaries they use because its unlikely some major news is going to occur overnight at a weekend that would get missed out.

Shorly for any news organistation to be taken with any credibility they should have a duty newsreader on hand!

And if i means they only normally do 2min buletin, so be it.

Maybe they could have a bank of duty reporters so if a story did break they could do the sumary, and if breaking news happend they could cover it, until a newsreader is in. (could be good training ground for them!)

Think it's very dangerous to start pre-recording sumarys at night, the very nature of news is that you don't know when it's going to happen! yes probably won't be a terrorist attack at that time, but natural disasters and accidents can happen anytime.

If there was no overnight service from ITN they would have been in trouble when Diana died, (that was early hours of sunday morning!)

I know there will be people in the newsroom 24/7 for both ITV and Channel 4 but would the average viewer really know if a summary (that not many watch anyway) was pre recorded? And would viewers even care?

I didn't mention this in my first post but there would be no harm in having one of the reporters go on air until a newsreader is brought in as you say.

I'm really not sure that's the point. Surely the whole deal about 'news' is that it's live - and more importantly, 'new'? As in, up-to-date? And surely recording the 'news' would make it old, not 'new'? Never mind that its a two-minute overnight summary. I'm sure I've not explained myself properly but hopefully you'll know what I mean.

Slightly OT now but I notice Bill and Romilly stood at the start of the Lunchtime News (though to be fair they've been sat down since the first headline!) Maybe the whole sitting down thing is being tested on the Evening News first?

Or maybe we're reading too much into it and Mary had a dodgy ankle, or foot injury and so couldn't stand up, lol.

I do like the standing starts I have to admit, and the standing up intros to reports use the wall much more, and bring a different element to the show, rather than just sitting down.

They were stood up again at the start of tonights show but the post about being sat down after the first headline really does lead me to believe some people aren't regular viewers of ITV News but comment on it anyway. The format of them standing whilst reading the opening story, going to a headline then finishing the story sat down has been happening for at least a year, possibly edging on to two, across all ITV bulletins.

I assume you're referring to me when you say that then? I am a regular viewer of ITV News. I view it at least twice a day and, obviously, have seen them stand up for the first headline at the start of the bulletin and the first headline of part two. Unless you think being a 'regular viewer' constitutes watching the 2am news summaries and the 5:30am Morning News in addition to the other three daily bulletins??

To be honest why do they even bother standing up to start off two stories anyway? I understand they have a fantastic newswall which is capable of fantastic imagery but there's absolutely nothing wrong with sitting at the desk for the whole bulletins if you include different camera shots. It's the news for goodness sake!

The ITV newsroom is indeed staffed 24/7 but after More4 News has finished (C4 News at weekends), the Channel 4 newsroom is deserted.

Yes, it was that comment because its just some still people think its some kind of miracle when the presenters actually sit down to read a story. I'm not bothered about standing up to be honest but I am in agreement that its pointless for half of two stories. One thing I always refer to on this forum and that is the average viewer. Would the average viewer really be that bothered if the newsreaders never stood up at the start of a show or stood up for the full story? Probably not. As you say its just the news.
