A good illustration of why the presenters have a blue backing sheet for their scripts:

Incredibly pedantic, but I believe ITV use green screen, rather than blue. A very good illustration though!

They do use green for the VR stuff but if they did use blue, they wouldn't want blue backing sheets, would they? Otherwise, the VR background really would show up on the scripts!

Thanks, I was about to say much the same thing Smile.
It looks as if the green floor and green lighting were reflected off of the last sheet of Lucy's script, which did return to white as the angle at which she was holding it changed.

Also, Jonathan, I don't find Romilly cold. She may not be the most engaging presenter but she comes across as nice enough.
As far as voices are concerned I don't think Lucy's is one of her strong points; it's not particularly the accent, which is fairly soft, more the overall quality which to me sounds ever so slightly raspy.

Insignificant moment on this afternoons bulletin that made me smile a bit Embarassed

Nina had finished reading the news and the credits were up and the usual zoom out etc. But they normally play along with it and pretend to shuffle their papers together neatly before sitting there just looking straight ahead until the bulletin has ended. Well she just did one quick shuffle then just slung them across the desk, and went on her computer for a bit Laughing

Geraint used to do that alot when he used to anchor the Weekend News. You'd think they would move the keyboard and mouse closer to them. So it doesn't look like they're going for a nap.

Geraint is one of the most messiest newsreaders when it comes to papers though, he has them scattered allover his part of the desk Laughing

ITV do use green but its not a green screen as we know it, its slightly different and is more sophisticated. Its lit up and is brighter for a start so its likely that the green will reflect onto the paper if theres no backing, and the backing sheets can cancel the colour out. But its a lot better with the blue sheets than the horrific orange sheets they used for a short period Laughing The floor has just been painted green and is in effect a green screen and is used in the same way.

The male presenters regularly wear blue and the desk sometimes has a blue tint so its highly unlikely its a blue screen. But I don't actually think Alex said it was a blue screen, he said its a good indication why they use a blue sheet- ie so the green can't reflect and turn the presenter into the backdrop.

A quick question, with the ITV studio set up as it is, so that the VR is stuck so that the camera can move around the VR, etc and is done so using the various discs on the ceiling, could they drop anything into the studio anywhere they want to, much like they do on the NEWS AT TEN with the glass screens?

So could they extend the set to make it look bigger, or make screen look smaller to us, and only add things to various parts of the screen, and create a different studio around it?

I think they probably could because I seem to remember a glass wall appearing in front of Nina on the evening news a few months ago Laughing

I think they could also make the set look smaller if they started the graphics wall literally on the floor with the presenter stood well forward they could probably get away with it because they could create an optical illusion much in the same way as they do with the false floor.

I'm no graphic designer as you'll be able to tell but I've just played around with an image just to show what they could do because they should treat the part of the floor nearer to the screen as the screen itself and the technology and the mind does the rest.

The picture shows one section just stretched to show how they could achieve the illusion of a smaller studio and a bigger atrium. If it was photoshopped properly it would look like the walkway is right behind the desk.

Why do they bother with a backing sheet? Why not just print the scripts on paper that won't reflect - or is it because they think they will look odd (or are difficult to read)?

Quite a few shows use yellow rather than white for scripts - as white paper used to be banned in TV studios as it was too bright and caused camera flares etc.

I think yellow would look out of place because the colour scheme of the programme is blue but sometimes it does look a bit daft especially when the blue backing sheets doesn't cover up the white sheets underneath. I'm sure they could get away with what you said- printing it straight onto coloured paper- and a very light blue (much like the lightest squares on the TVF banner) would be a good solution.

Which is exactly what they do on Sky

This is going to sound like a bit of a random question but does anybody know why they actually bother with computers on set? I mean what are they actually used for? Research, back up scripts for breaking stories etc or are they just there to make the set look technological and advanced?

(This doesn't just apply to ITV btw, its something across all bulletins but I post in this thread the most so thought it would be best to post in here)
NO
Nooze
I've definately seen them used for breaking stories on Channel 4 News many times, but can't remember them being used on ITV...

Thanks for that ... and here goes another post (quite a few off me on this page already almost one after the other Laughing )

Anyway just been watching the Evening News and Bill has been really good on it this week and last and he works better with Mary than Mark does. And it actually takes a lot for me to like male newsreaders so thats saying something. When Trevor finally leaves, they ought to move Mark back up to the late bulletin and bring in Bill full time to co present the Evening News.
