With some viewers tuning in who don't usually, it's probably a good idea not to weaken the brand by turning News at Ten into some sort of half hearted News at Ten/Late News/ITV News combination.
Personally I think they are right to refer to it as 'News at Ten' thoughout but I would have pulled away from the clockface early as on the shortlived late news

Doesn't it look stupid for the postcom sting to say 'News at Ten' at 11.35pm?! I can understand that they don't want to weaken the brand but now it just looks like they can't tell the time. I'm fairly certain that during the 1999-2004 era, if the news overran due to sport, it was just a generic bulletin. They should have done that. They could even have kept the NAT look with the edited titles (to remove the clockface) and made no reference specifically to News at Ten. Anything but this!
Incidentally, how did the 1990s News at Ten cope with overrunning sport?

Trevor was obviously pretty peeved about the football. "and finally, we've heard plenty about it already, but manchester united......."
Quite right. There's far more important things happening in the world than a football match.
Also, why on earth did ITN not get the titles rendered without the hands on the clock. That way they could overlay the hands live. It's not difficult.

Oh well it's the usual News At Ten - even the time on the clockface!
Also the introduction on the ITV1 ident said, "Congratulations Manchester United, Secret Diary of a Call Girl follows The News At Ten" This was also broadcast on ITV1Wales which i don't think are broadcasting that series tonight!

I found it bizarre to lead on that story considering the news would always be following the game anyway.

I thought it was strange too, but I presume that the idea was to try and keep the football viewers watching. I too didn't think that Sir Trev enjoyed hanging around for it to end, but do think that it was another excellent bulletin tonight, and I'm glad that they kept it as News At Ten. I'm not sure where else they could have taken it, they could have called it the Late News, or I suppose the News After Ten, but it's the brand that they're trying to keep, and at the end of the day it was only late due to a live sporting event before it.

This isn't the old days though when you knew what the Late News from ITN would be whether it was called News at Ten or not, now they need to ensure that viewers are aware of what News at Ten is no matter when it is broadcast.
That's probably why they ditched the Late News branding, it was diluting the News at Ten brand.
