But there's nowhere to promote her to. Both Mary and Katie have been at ITN since the mid-to-late 1990s and Julie was signed on specifically to present News at Ten. Nina, whilst being very good, cannot be promoted because there's nowhere for her to go. They need a weekend/relief presenter and she's it. I don't know why people on TV Forum are so fascinated with newsreaders being promoted all the time - somebody has to do the low-key jobs; not everyone can be main presenter!

Which is why I said if one is to leave Wink

Everyone in their job has aspirations to work their way up to the top. Why should newsreading be any different? They have about 4 or 5 different weekend presenters on the go so its not as though they're stuck for people to do low key jobs.

Nina's current position isn't exactly low-key; she is the main weekend presenter and weekday stand-in, and has a significantly higher profile on ITV than she had with the BBC.

An obvious opportunity for promotions was when the News at Ten was reintroduced but the powers that be chose to hire externally. (Personally I would have had Katie or Mary present the News at Ten with the other presenting the Evening News, of course assuming that they weren't first offered the position).

Mary could have presented News at Ten and Nina could then have been the main presenter of the Evening News.

Yes, or Katie could have presented the Evening News and Nina the Lunchtime News.
Personally I think Nina, like Julie, is better presenting on her own so more suited to the weekend bulletins, but the weekday programmes do have a higher profile, if that's where her ambitions lie.

Nina has probably fronted more bulletins on ITV News in the last year than either Katie or Mary. She's often been on the Evening News twice a week, plus for full weeks when Mary is on holiday, and probably similarly with the Lunchtime News too.

I agree she's good, but she's not that good IMO - certainly not worth demoting anyone else for. I was surprised though that she's not the regular stand in for News at Ten - I thought they might have given her that to give her a higher profile role.

A bit off-topic but I've just seen a trailer for Time Team on Channel 4 - the voice-over is done by the old ITN announcer... definitely a blast from the past. Still not sure of his name; does anyone else know who he is? All I know is he announced the presenter's names from around 1991 with the introduction of the Early Evening News, and was dropped in 2004 when the 'Theatre of News' was unleashed. I remember there was some kind of discussion on here about him a while ago but it never came to anything IIRC.

I think his name was Andrew Burt.

I noticed today and yesterday the Lunchtime News being in-consistent with the titles. Yesterday their was no mid-title sequence or over head studio shot, but just straight from the top story to the rest of the top stories. However, today it was back to normal.

If you also noticed yesterday straight after the pre titles/pre headline sting, instead of the first headline we were greated by the still of the main titles for a couple of seconds, then they wouldn't play, we even had Katie paused until most probably being told to continue.

I only tuned in during the first headline, but I see what you mean. I thought James and Katie looked very confused! It proves that they do the titles/headlines live though on the LN.

Strange, I thought there was just the slightest look of surprise on James' face and had it not been for the momentary fade to black before showing him and Katie in the studio no one would have noticed that the title sequence hadn't played as intended.
(Yes I am sad enough to still have it on the PVR Embarassed ).

I really like Nina, shame the BBC didn't use her more! And she is far from low-profile - yes she might not be at Julie Etchingham's level but she's far more senior and high-profile than some are making out!
