Nice but albeit brief mention of Carol Barnes on the Lunchtime News just now.

Probably about right considering the family asked for privacy - which the Daily Mirror interpreted as splashing it across the front page of the paper.

Sad news though - it's not that long since she did something for Tonight without a thirty-second introduction by Trevor McDonald about that former ITN reporter now living on a park bench.

When did she quit ITN - I remember her cropping up regularly on the Lunchtime News in the late 90's, but by the time of the 1999 revamp she had certainly left. Was she involved in the ITN News Channel at all like Julia Somerville?

She presented on the ITV News Channel during the Iraq War.

She was part of the launch team of the ITN News Channel. Not sure when she left the regular ITV news but she had been the weekend presenter until Katie Derham replaced her IIRC.

Very sad news about Carol. Only hope a miracle of some sorts happens.

I'm sure she presented at least a couple of ITV bulletins after the 1999 revamp? Though she did, as mentioned above, return (along with some other old faces) to present the ITV News coverage of the Iraq War.

Carol also presented some of LIVE with Angela Rippon segments when Angela had other commitments with the BBC.
Although this was only a couple of weekends by which time it was back to the reglar stand in.

She's had a stroke and is seriously ill in hospital. It's in tomorrow's Daily Mirror - nothing online yet though.

Really shocked to hear this news... I sincerely hope she pulls through.

Me too.

I remember she used to present the News at 5.40 regularly in the Early 1990s, then it was renamed the "Early Evening News" and John Suchet took over presenting. Carol then moved to the Lunchtime News.

I'm shocked about this news. Carol was a great newsreader and it was great to see her back on our screens last month on the Tonight programme.

I seem to remember that one day she presented all of the ITN News bulletins.

I hope she recoveres from this, but sadly I fear the worst Sad

Thinking about things- do we have a female veteran news reader anymore across any news channels/programmes? The tonight programme carol did not so long ago was really good, and was nice to see her back on screens.

I have to say, I always loved Julia Summerville- time to dig her out of retirment me thinks!!! Very Happy

Female news veterans - I guess the closest thing to one is Kay Burley now. I'd guess Anna Ford was the last of that generation to quit newsreading duties.

Katie Derham would be the longest serving female at ITV News - since about 1998, while I guess it's Fiona Bruce for BBC1, though has Kirsty Wark been at Newsround longer?

Think you meant NewsNIGHT not NewsROUND - though I'd pay money to see Kirsty "Live at Five"...

Kirsty and Jeremy were both presenting Breakfast Time in the late 80s - so they've both been presenting for at least 20 years.
