I'm sure many of us will have been on youtube recently looking at classic News at Ten and ITV News
I've got some questions, anyone know when the 'big ben clock face' titles were used across ITN News in the mid 90s, and when they changed to the 'wideshot of the studio' titles
Did all bulletins have the same style in these two eras or were there some odd bits such as the Morning News or News Headlines?

Big Ben clockface were used from 1995/6 until about 1998 I think, when they started using a wideshot of the studio with a short sting. That was for the Early Evening News. Usually the ITV region would run a sting for the news at 6pm, and then cut to the wide shot of the ITN news studio.

Unfortunately, I don't think they run tours of ITN. But, I agree I'm sure some people would be disappointed if they saw the real studio. Not for TV pres fans like us, though
No I don't think they do but a friend of mine went on a school visit there a little while ago and saw the green studio/theatre of itv news. They went for a 'creative' visit I believe.

Do ITV do tours of their studios? Must be such a disappointment for some people expecting to see this massive theatre of news and then to be faced with a big blob of green with a small table in the centre.

Yeah.
They way they did it though reminded me of when Trevor hosted the ITV News at Ten Thirty in 2004. Unfortunetly they didn't swing the camera round far enough to see the cameras.
Have they done this because the NEWS AT TEN glass logo from top left is left in all the time?

Mid-nineties they were introduced. Not sure when the Early Evening News dropped them, or if the Morning News did, but I think the Lunchtime News kept the clockface titles till the 1999 revamp.

Err - I'm pretty certain that the glass logo isn't real glass. It is an electronic virtual element of the virtual studio (though it is provided as a foreground rather than background key)

This raises a question...
I knew that the foreground glass hanging sign was fake, but when they do those pretty smooth camera pans, how do they know where it is?
Can the camera operators see the full V.R. picture or just the green studio?

My understanding is that all of the cameras are rendered with live VR backgrounds (albeit a couple of frames delayed), and these are available as sources on the vision mixer pre-keyed (using Ultimattes). I suspect the camera operator can switch between the rendered+keyed output and the clean camera output in their viewfinder. (Most cameras have at least one, often two, external feeds - so that they can line up shots with other cameras etc.)
Looking at the current News at Ten it would be interesting to know how many operators they have for the show. I'd imagine it is one on the studio floor for the moving camera and one remotely controlling all the rest?

The morning news kept the titles until just before the launch of the ITN News Channel. Even after the 1999 revamp the Morning News continued to be broadcast from the newsroom studio, and continued to use the same graphics.

Oh yeah - never really understood why they did that. I think they did change the logo though to "ITV Morning News".
Interesting to see with the Lunchtime News titles especially the clear link with News at Ten - the clockface used on the headline sequences looks to be in exactly the same style as the News at Ten logo of the time.
Personally I'd much rather see something like those titles recreated now than the old News at Ten titles - though I guess with the current clockface titles there is perhaps a little bit of inspiration from those there.
I just think though that the graphic used on News at Ten at the end of the headlines (at the end of the show) would be a great starting point for titles for the other shows - basically making a much classier version of what we've got now.
