Can anyone who remembers ITN bulletins on ITV from the 1990s tell me how advert breaks were handled? I know News at Ten has always had an ad break (YouTube video clips confirm this) right through until the 1999 move to 11pm, at which point I think it ditched the break. The Early Evening News, as far as I can remember, did not have an advert break because it was only 20 minutes long (when it was at 5.40pm). However, it is the Lunchtime News I am most interested in. That was about 25-30 minutes long in the 1990s - did it have an advert break? It just came to my mind when I was thinking about the current situation. Over the last few years all bulletins have fluctuated between having a regular advert break and not. As it stands, the only bulletin to have one is the Evening News.

ITV News should stay how it is and if there are any tweaks they should only be minor.

OK.

The only bad thing currently about the presentation of ITV News is the graphics such as the fake walkway, the over use of the ITV1 theme and the hideous atrium. They could use News at Ten launch as an excuse to expand on the blue graphics launched last year, and tweak the titles to include the blue as well as removing the awful yellow bar for the headlines and promotion of shows.

Right. So "ITV News should stay how it is" except for the graphics, reinstating a major piece of the set, reworking the theme and replacing the entire set background? Oh, and change the colour palette, alter the titles and change the straps. Just a tweak then.

What they should do is construct a real simple walkway in the same style as the old one then bring it on for ITV News and take it off for News at Ten. If it was already constructed, stored in the studio and it just needed to slot into place, then it wouldn't take 3 hours to complete.

Early Evening News definately didnt have an ad break as it was only just over 15 mins long I think as it ended about 17.56pm. Lunchtime news definately had an ad break, possibly 2 when the bulletin used to be 40-45 minutes long at one point.

I think with the Lunchtime News when it was 25 minutes long (as it was for some time) it didn't have a break, but it did if it was 30 minutes long. I think OFCOM rules only permit news bulletins to have a break if they're 30 minutes or longer.

Early Evening News (pre-1999) and the Nightly News (post-1999) were both just 20 minutes long so didn't have a break.

The ITV Evening News certainly had a break when it launches - wasn't until a few years later the break was ditched regularly, though it seemed to have sneaked back in most nights now.

Technically if with the new News at Ten regional news fills the 10.25-10.35 slot they won't be able to have an internal break, but will probably have one between the national and regional news as the other bulletins too.

Personally I think a break within News at Ten and then leading straight into the regional news would be better - but I don't think they'll do that - so News at Ten will probably finish not long after 20 past.

Says who?

Well i hope if it was going to be more of a permanent one then they would have put a little more effort into the design of it. Plus in June/ July last year it was announced that itv News would begettinrid of the gimicks, and standing up is one of those gimicks.

I am not saying that they should change the entire set, just do something about the fake walkway.

I think they could try to at least make the walkway look a bit more realistic, if it isn't temporary, I know its VR work but it looks as if its been done in Paint.

I have absolutely no problem with newsreaders standing up. Other current affairs programs have their presenters standing up so I don't see the universal rule from particular people that newsreaders have to sit down. What they should do is construct a real simple walkway in the same style as the old one then bring it on for ITV News and take it off for News at Ten. Whatever you're smoking I want some.

To comment on what you've said about this duplo walkway. Where are they storing it pumpkin - 'studio' you say? This is the same black (well, green now) box that IIRC the ITN News Channel came from, not exactly the O2.

There is currently no break between the ITV News at 10.30 and the late regional news, just the ITV National Weather

When I watched a News at Ten video on ITV.com, their was a glimpse the the 'green box'. The only real bit was the platform under the desk and the grey peice at the top of the video wall. The rest was green from the floor to the top of the video wall. Plus of course the desk and the presenter in rehearsal which was Julie, I think. Their was a man taking masking tape off the floor too.

Does the Evening News now not include the presenters walking back to the desk at the end of the programme?

Since Monday, (I think) their has been a short break.

Their is the Tops Tiles and then a couple of regional adverts, following the national weather.

I don't smoke, its disgusting. No need to be so rude.

Are you telling me that they wouldn't have enough space either behind the cameras or behind the graphics wall to store something for less than half an hour a day that wouldn't even be that big?

Its not the green box either, it is the old ITV News studio which had the real walkway. They moved into the green box you talk about, took the walkway out, painted the floor green then moved back into the proper studio.
