This morning's national summary came from the London news studio (studio 4).

There was a wide-shot at the start of London Today

I think CITV should fill up an hour of daytime because ratings aren't everything and it's sometimes decisions should be taken which are about strengthening their overall offering.

Why? ITV have an entire channel broadcasting CITV programmes. There isn't a need to duplicate this genre on the main entertainment channel for the sake of the 10% of homes which don't have access to digital TV (and probably don't include children).

So BBC1 shouldn't carry the news either?

The news programmes on BBCs 1-4 are entirely different to the offering on News24. Whereas the programmes in the former CITV slot on ITV1 were identical to the offering on their Childrens Channel.

I agree with Brekkie - it's a showcase. Just because there is a channel, doesn't mean some shows can't go on the main channel. How will viewers know it exists if it isn't promoted?

sorry when i made most of my posts recently I was tired and not explaining myself very well.

My problem is that all of the ITV news programs are on directly after the BBCs, which means when there's important news but I want a 'rounder' bulliten than News 24 or Sky, I automatically turn to the BBC. I cannot stand ITV regional news - what a load of crap personally - so always watch the Six so that I can watch some regional news .

The only time I've enjoyed ITV news in recent years has been when it was on at 12.30, when I watched it rather than the one! Nothing to do with length, just time.

My point is that if you can argue the news should be on at different times, surely competition should be different. I'm hopeful (and a good feeling) that NaT will be editorially different to anything we've currently got, but I often fail to see the difference between ITV News and BBC News except times!

Anyway, moving on, does anyone else think Mark will be the perm presenter of NaT within a year or 2??? We know Trevs only around for a year or so, and Mark is included in the NaT team, so it seems unlikely to me they'll bother to find another replacement!

Well I think they've told Mark he'll get it full time once Trevor goes, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was sidelined by either a new signing or having Julie hosting alone.

Certainly when Trevor goes though they should then definately let Katie do the Lunchtime News alone and put Alistair as Mark's stand-in on the News at Ten.

Martin Geissler's report just failed on the Evening News. The sound cut mid-way through, and we were left with all sorts of weird sounds. I'm suprised how long they let it run, normally when their is problems they go back to the studio quickly and apoligise. Luckily they had him on location, so Mary was able to talk to him.

I think they played the wrong music at the end of part one, it is the peice they use for the stings.

Edit: Correct errors

It looked like Mark and Mary were in a right mood tonight.

Good to see others have the Monday blues! Very Happy

Could be they took longer to bail out as they were debating how to get to Martin live and how to apologise etc.

Joyce Ohajah just appeared on the ITV News Summary, and will be back for the Morning News. Wonder where she's been?

Do they still sign off with 'more news later'?

And she did various dissappearing acts when the News Channel was with us.

Indeed, I remember they used to promote the 7pm slot as 'Live with Joyce Ohajah' yet 9 times out of 10 it was someone else who presented

By the way, what has happened to Phil Gayle, that fun bright and breezy chap who hosted Big Breakfast news a decade ago. He hosted the ITV Morning News over Christmas and bearly cracked a smile when he wished us Merry Christmas

Regional News is in terrible slots again on Saturday 12th January. The lunchtime bulletin is at the much earlier time of 11.05am and the main bulletin at 2.45pm. Its daft, why didnt they just show the regional news after the film at 5.30pm before the national news. Also in the past they have had the lunchtime bulletin as late as 2.40pm so people wont be able to tell them apart!

This is absolutely crazy. Who are these ITV schedulers? How do they come up these schedules? I'd love to meet someone who works in that department. I thought it was bad enough having regional news in the break of a film, but having the evening news at 2.45 is just criminal.

I've been told that its going to be the same for the following two weeks as well, as more Harry Potter films are being shown.

Admittedly, I have a vested interest in this. I work on the Saturday news in one of the ITV regions. My job is to put the local football scores on the screen and write a script to go with it. Because of this scheduling decision, I am not needed for the next 3 weeks! Then the week after I'm on holiday so cant work that week when the news should return to a more decent time (how typical is that?!) Mad

I think you've answered your own question.

By scheduling the two bulletins so close together they:
a) cut down on staffing costs
b) keep the ratings down

so that
c) they can claim there is no demand for weekend regional news, and discontinue it.

Weekend news on ITV in general has been appalling lately, but this latest scheduling of the regional news is killing one of it's key strengths.

ITV has always been leagues ahead of the BBC in terms of it's weekend regional news - generally a lunchtime 5 minute and an evening 15 minute bulletin compared to just a 5 minute evening summary on the BBC.

But as people say, it's being killed off by the scheduling - and quite deliberately too. I said when the regional news was taken out of the ITV News programmes that it seemed to be the first step in ITV's strategy to rid itself of local news - and this weekend business is just another part of a dirty campaign ITV is waging.

It is exactly why OFCOM need to step in and say, hey - it's about time we put those regional franchises up for auction again - and made ITV realised if they want to keep their big hitters on "Channel 3", they've got to keep their responsibilities too.
