How lazy are ITV1 News these days?

I usually do not see the morning and lunchtime news programmes as Iam out at work till 2pm but today since I was off I saw the 11:10am News Headlines and what is the point of it?

The headlines lasted just 1 minute with only 4 stories covered by Alistair Stewart who then 20 seconds later in the same studio presented the London Today bulletin with the backdrop just changed!

Does ITV have contempt for news? At least you get some kind of a proper update from the BBC News. Not just the headlines which anyone can read on Teletext.

Also I have heard that the News at Ten due to start in February will only be for 4 nights a week! I have a feeling they will make the same horrible mistake with this News at Ten as they did with the 3-night a week watered down News at Ten version of 2001-2004. Anyone else agree?

It's being discussed here.

Re: the summary. Completely agree - it's always been ridiculous IMO that you get literally three or four headlines of national news followed by a 5-minute regional summary packed with filler crap.

Yes, I agree with you. I can't understand why they give more time to the regions than to ITN. I'd much sooner have a fuller national/international round-up and a short regional summary than the other way round. It used to be a good summary a few years ago but they've gradually shaved time off it to leave what's left today.

I also wish they would re-introduce the mid-afternoon summary on ITV1. The BBC still manage to fit in a summary so I don't see why ITV can't. It's nice to just have a quick update every now and then between programmes.

Didn't they drop it because they extended the Lunchtime News?

It conveniently never reappeared after it was all cut back down again though!

The national afternoon summary was dropped long before that as for a few years it was just the regional news that went out about 3.00pm.

It still annoys me they put the headlines out at 11.10pm - seems such an odd time. The old arrangement of these brief headlines at 10.55pm, followed by a longer summary an hour later, worked much better - but when it was merged into one they just opted for the shorter summary, with any spare time being given over to the regions to make up their quota.

The morning headlines have always been short. During the late 90s/early 00s it was only one minute long. The afternoon headlines also were only one minute long, but were later extended to 90 seconds

Wasn't the afternoon bulletin dropped because at that time the 3pm hour on the ITV News Channel used to be presented by the ITV Evening News presenters, so it caused problems

Possibly, though I think it went before that was a problem.

IIRC it was from the Feb 2004 relaunch that Mark and Mary presented the 3pm hour - prior to that it was just one of them hosting from 4pm, and I think the 3pm bulletin had gone by then anyway.

It's complete madness though that the bulletins during the day have been scrapped - yet there is still at least one summary which plays out in the middle of the night!

If it was up to me, I'd have the following bulletins:

0530 - Morning News
1030 - Summary (before This Morning)
1130 - Summary (midway through This Morning)
1230 - Lunchtime News
1530 - Summary
1830 - Evening News
2200 - News at Ten
Plus a couple of overnight summaries.

With that line-up, all bulletins would be at half past the hour so they are easy to remember and the obvious exception would be NAT, which everyone knows by name anyway. I've never been a fan of the Lunchtime News at 1330; it was much better at 1230, with Loose Women at 1300. In any case, ITV really needs to make more of a commitment to news. It's the only way the channel can retain any credibility, especially with The Sunday Edition being axed.

I agree moving the Lunchtime News back to 12.30pm is a must - and IMO that is far more required than the resurrection of News at Ten.

As for summaries - pretty much agree, though one decent length one in the morning would be sufficient if done well.

I'm not bothered about overnight summaries - if axing them enabled decent summaries to be done during the day then that should be done.

Weekend News is the other area which really needs looking at, especially on a Saturday as discussed numerous times before. At the moment getting a 15-minute minute bulletin on air between 5pm and 11.30pm would be a start, but ideally I'd have a fixed evening 30-minute bulletin at 5.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays, incorporating the local news - and personally I'd do the same at 12.30pm too - though that's not as essential.

I would like to see the regional news back incorporated within the weekday bulletins again - the only sense I can see behind the recent separation is that ITV want local news ratings to fall so they can drop it!

This extended Local summary works well for UTV as this is their opening bulletin.

I made a point of tuning in to ITV1 for the morning summary just now and I have to say it is not as bad as it has been. Does anyone remember when the Lunchtime News had that ridiculous 'Pulse' segment? During that era, the summary was basically one news story with a massive plug for how to get in contact with ITV News to contribute to the Pulse. At least now we get three or four news stories, which is what most news summaries include anyway (be it BBC, ITV or Five).
