If the MediaGuardian article is true, on Friday nights I'd like to see a chatshow, to rival Jonathan W oss.

Instead of ITV trying to do 5pm chatshows with Antony Cotton, which was a total flop, but is back for a 2nd series.

Sharon Osbourne would make a good chat show host if in a late slot. I know she was crap at her tea time show but it was all scripted, and if she was unpredictable and didn't have to read off an autocue then she could do well, as she proved on Friday Night Project.

It should still be 10pm Monday to Friday irrespective of Friday night entertainment. Friday nights could still go like this:

1900 Emmerdale
1930 Coronation Street
2000 Tonight
2030 Midsomer Murders
2200 News at Ten
2230 Sharon Osbourne / Dara O'Briain / whatever

Or whatever. I don't see why the News need be at 11pm on Fridays at all.

Because Friday evening is considered part of the weekend. No one watches the news on Friday evenings or cares if it's not on. An interrupted film at 9 would be much more suitable.

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only person who watches the news on Friday night if I'm in. I'd care if it wasn't on...

I agree with you about the Friday Night news. I always watch it.

There's always BBC's 10 news, Sky News and News 24. I would not be critical of the late news on Friday evening. An interrupted premiere film would be far more popular and sensible.

Surely you mean uninterrupted? Wink

I don't think it's too much of an issue really - surely the people unlikely to watch the news on a Friday are just as unlikely to watch it any other night of the week?

Last time around I think branding it the Weekend News on a Friday and airing it at 11pm worked pretty well - it was moving it about earlier in the week that resulted in the "News at When" scenario.

This time though I think ITV have got to show they are fully committed to the programme - and therefore however inconvenient it is for them and the viewer, it has to be at 10pm five nights a week.

Moving on to another area - the decision to have Julie Etchingham co-host it could actually be a clever ploy.

For some reason, often co-hosted bulletins can be more appealing to the wider audience than having just the sole anchor - and I think if they do manage to have any impact on the BBC's bulletin, that will be a key reason.

The Evening News really began to take off when it switched from one presenters to two - so much so the BBC followed suit with the Six o'clock News a year or so later.

I'm still not convinced about bringing back Trevor though - they are basically selling it on the past rather than looking to the future - although indications suggest Mark Austin will replace him (again) sooner rather than later.

WARNING: FANTASY NEWS ROTA ALERT

I think they should have had the faith to launch it with Mark Austin and Julie Etchingham - and at the same time removing Mark from the Evening News and perhaps giving it Mary to host alone. (Despite what I said earlier about co-hosts, I think the Evening News needs to be more focused now - and for some unknown reason again having one anchor would help to do that).

Similarly I'd let Katie host the Lunchtime News alone, with Alistair Stewart instead acting as understudy for the News at Ten, along with Nina Hossain.

ALL CLEAR

Perhaps the biggest loser in this in the short term will be James Mate - who in many ways has made a name for himself more than Mark Austin on the 10.30pm bulletin in the last couple of years.

I doubt it. That looks like a shoddy job at a header to me, the News site looks fugly right now.

Exactly - that's just the font from the old ITV News logo by the looks of it!

I'm sorry but how exactly has James Mates made a name for himself on the 1030 news. Neither him or Mark Austin have, as yet, created a sense of gravitous around them evident in other presenters like Peter Sissons, Trevor McDonald and Bob Friend. I always remember feeling a chill when Bob Friend announced the top story if it was a big story.

The ITV logos look awful without the bar after the 'News' or numeral.
