I like the look of that newspaper background, looks much, much better than the teal.

Whats wrong with Mark Austin tonight?
He seems to be cocking up every sentence tonight. He's not the best of presenters at the best of times!

I personally didn't notice any problems tonight, but I agree that he's not a great presenter. He certainly doesn't have the authority of Trevor McDonald or John Suchet when they did the late news. What annoys me most is his sign-off. It sounds so disjointed and a bit backwards too. I hate the "those are tomorrow's headlines, and that was tonight's news". I cringe at that every night. But then, he goes on to say something like "but from me, it's goodnight, and thanks for watching". Why does he say goodnight first, and end on "watching"? Why not say "From me, thank you for watching, and goodnight". That would be more logical.

I agree! It makes me cringe too. Shocked

At least I'm not alone. Maybe he should adopt Jo Blythe's sign-off: "goodnight; sleep tight"! Laughing

I think John Suchet is the most missed presenter from ITV News. Trevor was OK, but John had a special presence on screen. As Rat said, he was calm, collected and authoritative. It was a crime that he didn't get the late news to himself. If only he'd have hung on another couple of years, he'd have probably got it instead of Austin. Mind you, the bosses can't even recognise the abilities of Alastair Stewart, so he probably wouldn't have!

I wish that they'd incorporate the blue look into the regional news as the current teal is getting on my nerves!! The national set looked horrible in teal and I think the blue makes it look loads better. I just wish that they'd do the same with the regional studios.

That would be a lot better! Laughing

Hmm I agree about Suchet, but not Stewart. I think viewers find Alastair too pompous and smug.

I think tonight's Evening News had a fantastic coverage of the Iraqi affairs. They spent at least twelve minutes on world news therefore. But then it was back to bad habits by reporting on a bus accident that wasn't really worthy of five minutes of coverage.
PA
pad
ITV News seems different this lunchtime - I don't watch it much but does it usually not have headline straps into reports?

Also the Live stuff faded on instead of animated on, and seemed smaller. It was all split-screen too, instead of video wall.

They've been using the split-screen at lunchtime for a while

And it's animating again now.

False alarm! Very Happy

I am guessing someone from ITN/ITV News has been here, as Mark signed off tonight with: "Thanks for watching, and I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight."

It's about 30 % bigger now and i'm enjoying the extra length. Smile It's made up a little for the severe truncation of the lunchtime news.

The girls in my region(s) are signing off with amongst other things an encouragement to stay with ITV and keep watching etc. I find it quite sweet even if it has the slight whiff of desperation.

They've been doing that a lot on Thames Valley Tonight.

Haha, I noticed that! Makes you wonder.... In any case, it was better last night.

They've also been doing that on Granada.

So the extension to 11.05pm is actually because the bulletin has been extended by 5 minutes and not just to mop up the late running they have at this time
