The thing is the BBC's looked real even to us anoraks. With ITV's virtual world whilst average viewers may not notice it just looks absolutely awful to us. The newsroom may not be pretty but it's an option - I mean why not present from a section in the atrium? Or alternatively why not just shove them in a little CSO?

It's the overhead shot that looks dodgy, but apart from that to most the difference would be totally unrecognisable. Looks good considering Bill is probably stood on a box, surrounded by green.

Compared to the actual set, the only noticeable difference is the floor and the lighting is a bit different.

Ive been thinking. If ITV are only getting a new desk for the real studio, couldn't they just do what there doing in the virtual studio - not put the camera on the desk ? I think something much more is changing than the desk. I have a feeling they will be changing the walkway OR adding a pod on to it (ala sky)

It really is amazing how they can get it to look like the real thing. Obvioulsy I can tell it is not in the main studio, but to others, I'm sure they would never notice. I wouldn't use the overhead shot though, it does look a bit messy.

Am I the only one not really expecting much to change? All this talk of a "pod" like Sky News - where the hell has that idea come from? Don't get your hopes up!

This is all we know, from a MediaGuardian article,

"From January 16, the studio and titles will also be revamped to give them a "warmer" feel with more people on view, though the iconic blue background will remain."

Whatever, "more people on view" means. I'm not expecting a lot either, probably testing with the new graphics or something. I'm sure they're limited to what they can do in a weekend.

I wonder if the new theme will be on KPM and by the same guys - Dave Hewson & Bill Bayliss.

Well the National News is keeping the music, but The Regional music is gettinga tweak, and as yet, there is no sign of it on KPM, so perhaps RedBee are arranging a custom made theme or remix...

Actually, the music used on the main ITV1 National News is changing, too. It's going to be similar to the current stuff, but different nonetheless.

Am surprised no one has brought this up before I stumbled upon this from mediaGuardian
Quote:
ITV and Channel 4 news bulletins could be hit by industrial action over compulsory redundancies at news provider ITN resulting from the closure of the ITV News Channel.
Union officials from the NUJ and Bectu are today holding an emergency meeting with ITN members to gauge the strength of feeling about industrial action over job losses at the ITV News Channel, which closed last month.

The unions are still in talks with ITN management about minimising the impact of the closure by finding jobs for as many ITV News Channel staff as possible in other areas of the company.

It was originally feared the channel's closure could lead to up to 70 compulsory redundancies, but that figure has already been cut to 35 following negotiations between management and unions.

Most of the ITN job opportunities are understood to be in the news provider's radio and new media operations, but there are also said to be some openings at ITV News and Channel 4 News.

However, the unions' mandate is to try to avoid compulsory redundancies altogether and further talks with management are planned for next week to try to resolve the remaining differences between the two sides.

"The number of compulsory redundancies has come down significantly, progress has been made and that's helpful," said Paul McLaughlin, the NUJ national broadcasting officer.

"There's still more work to be done to get that figure down - our mandate is to avoid compulsory redundancies. We have got difficult talks ahead and it remains to be seen whether industrial action is necessary - but we hope to avoid it."

I can't see why they're bothering changing much at all, so soon after the last relaunch. Surely all they need to do is change the graphics on the wall to fit in with the new branding.

The evening news on now seems to be coming from the main studio with all the usual shots, then again i never watch 'News for the Slow', sorry ITV News, so I'd probably not spot many differences.

Take it back, yes it was in the virtual (or more virtual) studio. You could tell the 'path' and floor was CGI at the end.

Is it just the presenter's semi-ovular side of the desk that's real? I could see a really obvious join between that and something else, wondering if the front of the desk is real too?
