I wouldn't see the Evening News reduced to 1 presenter. The general public would see this as some sort of budget cut and it may also reduce the viewing figures

Mark obviously shouldn't be doing the late news and it should be Alistair Stewart but that's been mentioned millions of times before and isn't going to happen

I think Katie, like Mary, is far better when she does the news alone.

Anyway, the Radio Times is listing Lucy Owen as presenting bulletins this Sunday.

As I've been saying pretty much since Mark took over the 10.30pm, Mary should become the sole anchor of the Evening News with Mark only featuring for shows like this weeks when he anchors on location, only hosting in the studio when he stands in for Mary.

And unquestionably the Lunchtime News should return to one anchor, with Katie the main anchor and Alistair the regular stand-in.

Alistair should get a role similar to what John Suchet had a couple of years ago - hosting the Sunday night bulletins and then being a regular stand in on bulletins in the week - I think he'd probably end up doing the Lunchtime News at least twice a week.

Sounds good to me. Mark irritates me, so the less we see of him the better. I think I could take him just on the News at 10.30, but his current double duty on the Evening News as well is too much. Katie obviously deserves the Lunchtime News, as does Mary the Evening News. I like your idea of Alistair being the weekend presenter - that would mean Geraint being eradicated from those shifts, which is a good thing, IMHO.

Tonight, I watched the BBC Ten O'Clock News and have just switched over and am currently watching ITV News. I only usually watch one or the other, or neither. The difference is quite striking. ITV News is so incredibly sensationalist (more so than I realised), whereas the BBC is more muted and reserved. For instance, ITV News have that ridiculous DOG saying "AFTERSHOCK" whereas the BBC just has "IRAQ: 4 YEARS ON". ITV also referred to Baghdad as the "city of death" whereas the BBC just called it Baghdad. I also found the BBC's reports contained more detailed background information than ITV's.

I don't understand why you say that Mark Austin irrtates you. To me he is about the only personable presenter on ITV news. Alasdair is one of the worse IMO. He has an awful machine gun delivery plus he gets too intense, seems very nervous, no go for news presenting. He is even worse if that's possble on London Tonight, Cringing

I've said it before, but in the past year the writing style on ITV News has changed markedly.

ITV News has always been more populist than the BBC, but the balance has tipped to the extent that it verges on self-parody at times.

ITV News is now absurdly sensationalist to the point that it destroys the impact when they have a really dramatic story to report because they talk in such apocalyptic terms 365 days a year.

It is TERRIBLE and a gross disservice to the serious journos at ITN.

I haven't looked at the audience figures recently so I don't know if the shock tactics are good for business, but it is certainly not good for ITV's credibility as a respectable news provider.

Now, I'd rather watch Alistair than Mark. He's more authoritative and his delivery is better. Mark doesn't really have onscreen presence - he doesn't have a lasting impact on me. I suppose it is all down to personal choice.

I watched a full edition of ITN News at Ten with Trevor from 1992 on You Tube the other day. The difference between then and now is astonishing. Back in '92, it was far less sensationalist than it is now.

I totally agree, and you can trace it back to the last refresh last February when they started with the unnecessary zoom in the opening headline.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that David Mannion (who originally turned things round when ITV News seemed to be floundering) is no longer in direct control of the bulletins.

There is also an early 1980's edition of ITN News at Ten on YouTube, presented by Sandy Gall and Selina Scott. It is incredibly good, IMO.

Just straight, simple, news presentation. I truly love the tones and style of Selina's youthful voice and pronunciation. It is markedly "cut-glass" and formal.

That's the way I like my news - formal and not at all tabloidy. But, that's my opinion. Others enjoy the sensationalist twist that has occurred with the advent of rolling news and satellite stations.

Give me Sandy Gall and Alastair Stewart any day.

It's getting the balance right.

Two people sitting behind a desk isn't for me - but neither is walking about and virtual graphics just for the sake of it.

I do think most the stations have the balance right in terms of presentation - generally standing using the video wall (or whatever) for the first story and the "special report" feature midway through - and sitting down for the rest of the bulletin.

Graphics on the lunchtime news today were appalling. Some stupid graphic that flipped every second - which thankfully ended up getting pulled off air after five minutes, mid interview none the less. Then there were full screen graphics slides during a report which were done in the wrong ratio or something - whatever it was, you couldn't read them.

Then they used some jib shot where Katie actually came into shot from behind the jib. She walked into view, up the catwalk, from the bottom left of the screen with the camera in a fixed position focused on the newswall - 'twas strange.

Anyone see the drama 'Mobile' on Monday night? Was that report by Geraint Vincent done especially for the programme or was it something about Iraq from the archives - didn't quite catch what he was actually reporting.
NO
Nooze
I noticed Geraint Vincent reporting on Mobile too - I wasn't sure whether it was a real report either.

I don't really get why people think Alistair Stewart is more 'authoritative' than Mark Austin. He says stuff like 'Great to see you' to the people he's interviewing whic is sometimes not really necessary and yesterday he was slightly strange on the lunchtime news and seemed to completely miss the next link at one point and said something random before slamming the desk with his hand. Razz I know the lunchtime news is more 'lite' than the 10.30 but still...! I'm not a massive fan of his delivery either. Prefer Mark/Steve Scott/Bill Neely. Each to their own I suppose!

Did you or anyone else managed to get captures of this? Thanks if possible.

Trevor McDonald is coming back to present a new ITV programme called NewsKnight ('Newsnight") in the summer.

One has to wonder why............................
