It's not something that happens too often though with newsreaders unless they retire.

Normally if they announce they are to switch channels they are sent off on "gardening leave" and never seen again until they start their new job!

Probably because of the way he is moving. He isn't going to the other side as a promotion. He's going to News 24 to try something else for a few years until he retires. I expect it would have been different if he was leaving to do the Six

I think it is more the fact that he's been such a long-serving journalist for the one organisation. For ITN to pull him off the air would have been disrespectful to the 23 years of effort Nicholas has put into the organisation. It's just recognition of his loyalty and service.

I wondered why Nick was presenting both the evening and lunchtime bulletins today. Nice that they gave him the Evening News on his last day.

Can anyone explain to me how on the ITV News bulletins we can see the backdrop of the newswall reflected onto the newsdesk? Isn't the newswall a green screen? As a newcomer to looking at how ITV News and other news rpogrammes are produced I would like to know!

The "reflections" in the desktop are generated by the same software which creates the newswall.

The software knows where the surface of the desk is supposed to be, and creates an inverted image in that area. The green is reflected on the desk surface providing a keying surface for the reflected background to appear on.

Very clever system.

Er, nearly right but not quite. This has been covered on here several times before. If I remember correctly, it's not that the software has to know where the desk is. It's simply that any green reflection below the actual wall must by definition be a reflection and so an inverted wall image is keyed on.

Still clever though.

Nicholas Owen leaves itn on wednesday 7th february

Looks like today's the day.

Indeed and, according to MediaGuardian, he's doing both the Lunchtime and Evening News bulletins...

It is Nicholas Owen day at ITV. The news presenter, who turns 60 this Saturday, signs off for the last time today after 23 years - count 'em - with ITN. As a reward - and Monkey believes this could be a world first - Owen will mark his last day at the broadcaster by presenting both the ITV lunchtime news, with Katie Derham, and the main ITV Evening News, with Mary Nightingale. Here are three things you probably didn't know about Nick, who will join BBC News 24 next month. 1. He joined ITN in 1984 on Channel 4 News. 2. He started his broadcasting career at the BBC, so in a sense he is going home. 3. He presented ITV's rolling news coverage of the death of Princess Diana. Okay, so you knew the last one. Over to the man himself: "I suppose that's what people will remember me for mostly [the Diana crash]. It was a frightful story, and up to that point the biggest story of the TV age, if not the most important." Monkey resists the temptation to ask him about Sporting Triangles - that was the other Nick Owen, of course. "I'm thrilled that ITN has let me do both shows on this of all days. It's a marvellous way to end what has been an utterly superb 23 years among the most talented and lovely colleagues." Anyway, ITV, 6.30pm. There won't be a dry eye in the newsroom.

And I thought Dermot Murnaghan presented that coverage!

Yes, Dermot anchored with Nick by his side from the word go.

Nice touch to the lunchtime news today with snow in the backdrop

Also the opening was slightly different as Katie and Alistair were stood at the left of the newswall instead of the right.

I have always really liked the no nonsense style of Nicholas Owen, and I am also glad that Nick is back to full health again after his illness a few years ago. Long may he continue to grace our screens, albeit over on News 24.

I am kinda hoping that he will replace Huw Edwards on the Ten (or even George and Zippy on the Six............)

I don't really see him creeping into the main BBC1 team - if he did I think the most likely place you'd see him is Breakfast, which I'd imagine he'd be quite good on actually.

Katie sounded quite choked up at the end of yesterday's bulletin.

I think it is wrong that they are keeping the Lunchtime News as a two presenter format. It just need's one presenter, and that presenter should be Katie. With Alistar doing the Nightly News (and not the Lunch with Katie), instead of Mark who should just do the Evening News.

Dermot was the presenter but Nick was the Royal reporter at the time so he did a lot of the coverage.
